5.0 out of 5 stars Definitive IIS book in small package
It is a very complete look at Windows 2000 and IIS 5 administration. It features lots of detailed information as well as the step-by-step procedures that are absoltely necessary to being successful. I haven't found another IIS book that was as useful in day to day. I would have to say this should be part of every IIS admin's library. Some of the chapters are really worth...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not enough.
I bought this book together with the IIS 5.0 Beginner's Guide from Osborne McGraw-Hill. Since I have both, I can honestly say that I rarely pick this one up to use it. I'm one of those people that buy up all the books I can on a subject when I have a job to do. While this book is well-written, it seems to be little more than the help features built into IIS 5.0.

I haven't found another IIS book that was as useful in day to day. I would have to say this should be part of every IIS admin's library. Some of the chapters are really worth the price of the book, especially when Stanek's expert advice gets you out of a jam. I had a lot of problems with FTP and SMTP before I got this book. I also used to have problems understanding IIS security. You should buy this one without a doubt.

5.0 out of 5 stars # 1in my book, April 21, 2002

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 2000 and IIS 5.0 Administrator's Pocket Consultant (IT-Administrator's Companion) (Paperback)
Windows 2000 and IIS 5.0 Administrator's Pocket Consultant is the most useful IIS book I've ever bought. I use this book more than any other, so glad the cover is thick and the spine capable of handling a beating. The rounded corners are good so that the corners don't curl/bend like on other books. I found the detailed information to be very good and in most cases there's more information in this book than in the huge references I used to use. Excellent resource and highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most comprehensive guide to IIS available, October 17, 2001
This review is from: Microsoft Windows 2000 and IIS 5.0 Administrator's Pocket Consultant (IT-Administrator's Companion) (Paperback)
Wow! This book is incredible....Until now I had been looking for a good book in IIS and wasn't able to find one then I happned to see this one. I must say it is the most complete IIS book that I have ever found. I have found many chapters that by themselves were worth the price of the book take chapter 4 for example that covers customizing IIS.

In that signle chapter Mr. Stanek provides a detailed guide to understanding how ISAPI/ASP applications works and how you can optimize IIS for various needs. He provides a step by step detailed examination of pooling impact on memory/CPU usage and then details how to customize the environment for pooled and nonpooled applications. After thatm he goes into how you can map custom application extensions, manage session state, control buffering and more. He even details how to unload applications from memory then finishes the chapter by providing a fewe additional customization tips, like how to create an update site that can be displayed while you are updating a primary site, how to create advertising jump pages and how to create customized 404 error pages.

Again, I must say WOW because that is only one chapter in a book filled with such chapters. This book is incredible and the only person that would every say it wasn't is someone who doesn't want other administrators to have these secrets. I use this book to help me manage our corporate web site and I've never found a question that it couldn't answers. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for IIS, August 31, 2003

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 2000 and IIS 5.0 Administrator's Pocket Consultant (IT-Administrator's Companion) (Paperback)
Another excellent pocket consultant from William Stanek. This a wonderful resource especially for people like me, making the transition from Apache. I'm making the change after 7 years of using Apache, and this book will stay close at hand. Mr. Stanek has once again written a valuable book that is easy to use and understand. Thank you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book on IIS, July 11, 2003
This review is from: Microsoft Windows 2000 and IIS 5.0 Administrator's Pocket Consultant (IT-Administrator's Companion) (Paperback)
If you admin IIS and you don't have this book, you're missing out. Stanek writes near perfect computer manuals--easy enough for beginners but with plenty of info for computer professionals. I've bought several in the "Pocket Consultant" series and none disappointed me.

As far as the covers of the book falling off, never happened to me. The covers are extra thick and stitched. I've abused, I mean used my book for nearly 2 years. Excellent!

4.0 out of 5 stars Bad quality, July 3, 2003

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 2000 and IIS 5.0 Administrator's Pocket Consultant (IT-Administrator's Companion) (Paperback)
I have nothing to add to the other posts here, regarding its content. I'm just learning IIS and this is more or less my starting point -- actually the "readers' reviews" here att amazon.com made me start out with this one. It hasn't disapointed me so far. Stanek is a skilled writer.

However, this book -- like the others in this series (I've read and used the Pocket Consultant for Windows 2000 and Windows XP too) -- has bad bindings.

I'm sitting here at my lab environment, haven't worked my way through to one fourth of the book yet, but already it is falling apart on me.

This is no good for a book which is advertised as a handy little pocket to use in your daily work. I hope I'm not as temporarily as this one.

A must for everyone who is serious about IIS. I have read it from cover to cover. Stanek is simply the best technical writer about windows. You get the impression that he really knows what he is talking about and isn't afraid to share. This book will show you every feature that you need to know.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource, March 1, 2003

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 2000 and IIS 5.0 Administrator's Pocket Consultant (IT-Administrator's Companion) (Paperback)
Other readers have given this book five stars and for good reason IMHO. If you are a real world administrator, this is the best book to have. This book does present a lot of in-depth information you need as well as great information for everyday administration. Thorough, detailed, and I must say accurate examination of the topics without being boring. Most helpful to me were the chapters on customizing IIS, performance tuning, tracking and optimization. A great index makes this an excellent reference book too.
