Great for Gaming
If you're in the market for a mouse that will enhance your game, look no further. In addition to the superior control and precision that a laser mouse offers, the Laser Mouse 6000 boasts new software features like Precision Booster and Gaming Toggle to give you the competitive edge. Meanwhile, the scroll wheel with detents enables extremely accurate scrolling--perfect for accurate weapons changing in fast-paced first-person shooters.
Magnify
The Magnifier function on Microsoft mouse products is like a magnifying glass that is held up to your computer screen. With a simple press and hold motion, the Magnifier enlarges the area of your screen that fits inside the lens. You can easily adjust both the size of the lens and the level of its magnification. You can even use it when you touch up your photos or handle other detailed tasks. The Magnifier works in most programs.
Note that the Magnifier is not compatible with Direct3D API in full screen mode, media players, OpenGL, and layered windows. If you are using Mac OS X, the Magnifier enlarges text and images on the entire screen.

I use it as a mouse, not gaming device,

Yea...I know, Microsoft calls it a "Gaming Mouse", well, it's really not. As others have said, the side buttons are not convenient for that. But...for its intended purpose...a mouse, it is superb. I'm not sure about the person who had troubles with the magnifier button, mine works perfectly and there is no jerking of the "window" as it moves across the screen. Perhaps they had a slower machine? Microsoft recommends a 233MHz minimum and Windows 2000 or XP. From Microsoft's site, it is an 800 DPI mouse with up to 6000 "frames" per second. That is, it reads the laser's position 6000 times a second. I haven't found a surface where it doesn't work. I replaced one of Microsoft's optical mice (Wheel Mouse Optical) with this for better resolution...works perfectly. I'm very happy with it "as a mouse" for computer stuff...not playing games (that's just not my thing...but for lots of folks it is their thing).
Smooth, easy to use, works perfectly for me.

What were they thinking?,
This review is from: Microsoft Laser Mouse 6000 (Personal Computers)
I've rarely had bad experiences with Microsoft mice or keyboards. Usually they tend to have above average design and put thought into the product.
They evidently didn't hire the "good" designer to work on this product however as this mouse has 2 glaring faults. #1: The shallow height and shape of the mouse is such that it offers no support for your hand whatsoever. This causes hand strain and inconsistent hand placement as you use it. You never get the feeling that your hand is in "the right position". #2: The side buttons are in brain dead locations. Why this is I have no idea, as other Microsoft models put the left side button right where your thumb would be if you move your thumb up slightly (the way it should be). On this "gaming" mouse the left thumb button is much too far forward causing you to have to practically re-adjust your grip on the mouse just to press it. Couple this with problem #1 and the lack of surface contact with your hand causes the mouse to skew under your hand as you press the button thus turning your player to one side when you didn't intend to. Just what you don't want when throwing a grenade. The right button is sort of click-able with your pinky and is actually the more accessible button, but it feels more due to luck than planning. I have to wonder if they even tested this design with any gamers at all before putting it out on the street. I give it 2 stars because for the attempt at wireless feel with the thin cord, and it looks visually appealing. Calling this a "gaming" mouse however and charging a premium for it is a joke you should spare yourself being the butt of. Rating: Not Recommended.

This review is from: Microsoft Laser Mouse 6000 (Personal Computers)
I used this mouse for about a year on my work PC, and after that time it stopped working (the laser went out). So, I called Microsoft support and with just a few questions answered they shipped me out the latest and greatest version of the mouse absolutely free, without the hassle of returning the broken device. Microsoft has done this for me with their hardware time and time again and that's why I keep buying it... sure they devices may go out after a year or two of use but with a simple phone call I can get them upgraded and replaced for free.
