4.0 out of 5 stars Knowledge don't come cheap
I used the Networking essentials book from this kit and flew the exam, everybody told me that I was over studying. For workstation and server I changed tack and went out and got examcrams. Read them one day, passed the next, forgot about it the day after. I'm now up for enterprise and I am reverting back to the MS-press for the way it drums in the detail. Passing the...

2.0 out of 5 stars There are better ways to get your MCSE
Don't get us wrong, it's not that these books are terrible. It's just that if you're going to spend this kind of money on a set of books, they better be all you need. Sadly, the Training Kits lack much of the essential knowledge needed to pass the exams. We would recommend purchasing other books like Sybex, Exam Cram, New Riders and Alan Carter's book depending on...

Passing the exams is one thing, knowing the subject is another. If you want to remember what you study way down the track use MS press, if you just want a paper qualification don't waste your money. Justify that before you purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference and study guide., July 26, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Microsoft Certified System Engineer Core Requirements Training Kit (Training Kits) (Paperback)
Not only will this training kit help to prepare you for the test, it will make an excellent reference when you are done with the core courses. The kit comes with 120 day evaluation copies of server and workstation. You also get simulations and worthwhile videos. If you use these books correctly and do all the labs, you are a shoe in to pass the tests. They do contain alot of info that is not on the tests but do you want to study only for the test, or be able to do your job well? Other books can focus you in for the tests but these books will make you an excellent and viable MCSE.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is what you need to pass the tests., February 22, 1999

I'm confused as to why so many people are criticizing all the Microsoft Press Books. I have taken the 4 Core exams so far and have passed all of them on the first try. Don't blame the books people. There might be something else at work here. Yes the books are dry but how exciting can you make an operating system? The excess information that you may or may not need for the exams is not useless. Who know which questions you will be asked. All of the tests are different. It just makes you better prepared and may eliminate some of the paper MCSE's out there which seem to be flooding the market.

5.0 out of 5 stars once again microsoft, does it again?, September 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Microsoft Certified System Engineer Core Requirements Training Kit (Training Kits) (Paperback)
Once again, I passed 2 out of the 4 of these test, using the mspress books, and some help from the transcender folks. The reading is tedious, but once through it, the cool things that you learn far outweigh any hard feelings experienced throughout the reading, I mean, think about it, this is the straight shot from the horse's mouth, you can't get any closer. I would also recommend windows nt tcp/ip network adminstration, it goes perfectly with the networking essentials,

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and complete., September 13, 2000
This review is from: Microsoft Certified System Engineer Core Requirements Training Kit (Training Kits) (Paperback)
Not only does this kit provide excellent study material, but it will also prove to be an invaluable reference afterward. For people (like me) who cannot afford the instructor-led courses, this kit provides the necessary training to not only pass the exams, but also to be a good network engineer. Use one of the study guides just before the exam, but use this kit to gain a thorough understanding of the material first.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must, that is of course if you are trying to "Learn", August 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Microsoft Certified System Engineer Core Requirements Training Kit (Training Kits) (Paperback)
I found that you should read the Mspress books first to actually "study" and "learn" principles and the technology. And then passing the exam is another issue. The Mspress books are not geared to help you pass the exams, they are to help you learn. Read these books, then go buy an Exam Cram book to help you pass the tests. I passed all 6 exams with flying colors. -Chris, MCSE, MCP+I, CCNA

The included CDs which contain NT workstation & server 120 days trial alone worth the $$ already. Show me a training kit that include these trial OS ?

1.0 out of 5 stars Bill does it again., December 2, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Microsoft Certified System Engineer Core Requirements Training Kit (Training Kits) (Paperback)
I have to say, if I wasn't such a fan of microsoft, I'd defect to pc-dos. These books fall into the typical microsoft arsenal of useless products for usefull tasks. I have taken and passed all four core tests. First I failed after studying these books and then I passed using a few others. Mind you these books do in fact cover almost everything, which would be great if you could take the books with you for the tests. Unfortunately, the amount of useless (non test related) information is so large you windup remembering all the needless information. If this was a reference manual I would have given it five stars.... but this falls way short of a training and test preperation manual, which it was intended to be. Big thumbs down Bill.
