Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Don't wait until the night before to study for the Microsoft Certified Professional Exam for Windows 95. As the Windows 95 Exam Guide demonstrates, the test covers all aspects of Microsoft's popular operating system from the rudiments of installation to using Windows 95 clients on a server-based network. The book, which is an official study guide, offers a crash course on all of these subjects, complete with lab exercises and practice tests. It is a little leaner than other Windows 95 study guides but the added resources in the appendix are valuable.

Chapter subjects include threads and procedures, printers, communications, an overview of the Windows 95 architecture, and details on using Windows 95 with NetWare and NT servers. In addition, there is a full glossary, information on certification, a suggested reading list, and a listing of useful Internet resources.

You don't need to take the test to benefit from the study guide. There is enough here to teach any system administrator or adept Windows user a thing or two. This exam guide also makes for a fine Windows 95 reference book. Icons indicating notes, tips, and key concepts allow users to quickly reference material. Each chapter is filled with screen shots, examples, and diagrams for clarification. The included CD-ROM contains an initial exam to assess your skills, more chapter questions, and a practice exam.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent material, although supplementary aid is needed., January 20, 1998
This review is from: Microsoft Certified Professional Guide Windows 95 (Ms Certified Professional) (Hardcover)
The contents of the Exam Guide is presented well. Problem is...much necessary material is simply NOT THERE! Features appreciated: many fine illustratons, layman's language, imparts a fine 'overall' feeling about Win95. Shortcomings: only skims the surface on some very important topics, not enough real-world scenarios, upon taking one set of tests you have taken them all--they merely repeat, definitely omits areas tested on MCP cert. exam, several misprints, contradicts Resource Kit more thatn once, review (test) questions are not nearly tough enough (nothing like the real thing). With the aid of the Exam Guide, I did manage to pass on my first try. However, I used the Resource Kit along with a little networking experience. Without either, I would be re-testing, for sure!

3.0 out of 5 stars Supplement with other study guides & practice exams!!!, January 8, 1998
By
This review is from: Microsoft Certified Professional Guide Windows 95 (Ms Certified Professional) (Hardcover)
Although I passed the test with a higher score than expected (885), I felt it was because I augmented my knowledge with other materials (New Riders Windows 95 & Networking Essentials, Learning Tree Windows 95 Support & Networking coursebook and Transcender exams). I felt the book was written in a non-complex way to digest the technical material. The chapter exam questions were not challenging enough nor scenerio geared. For the life of me, I do not understand why the chapter exams, mastery exam, and the self assessment exam used the same old questions. The lab exercises did not hold my interest so I stopped doing them.

3.0 out of 5 stars Adequate book, does not cover advanced issues, December 20, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Microsoft Certified Professional Guide Windows 95 (Ms Certified Professional) (Hardcover)
With this book and the Win95 Resourse Kit, I just barely passed the test. This book does not cover topics in depth enough. The Win95 R/K supplements the book very well. There is the possiblity of things being on the test that the book does not cover. Good Luck!
