A Great Book!,
By "zaine@anova.org" (Kansas City, MO USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Microsoft Excel 2002 Formulas (With CD-ROM) (Paperback)
When Walkenbach published the first version of this title, I read it cover to cover in a week, impressed with the scope and depth therein. Now, in the 2002 version, he has taken reader feedback and enhanced several chapters, along with making the layout even easier to read. He not only explains formulas in a clear and concise way, but with the book comes a CD that gives you the .PDF version for my laptop. Also, the author's website also provides a whole other world of Excel knowledge and links.Sprinkled liberally throughout the book are tips, tricks, warnings for advanced techniques. And Walkenbach is not afraid to criticize Microsoft for not making the software's statistical features more robust and its worksheet size larger. Take note Microsoft. In all, Walkenbach has the rare ability to take complex things and explain them simply. As a result, I bought two copies of this title for my office staff to read and reference, too.

Comprehensive but still user-friendly,

If you were to have only one Excel book in your library, this would be it! I have been using Excel for years, and have learned more from this book that anywhere else. Walkenbach takes the reader from the basics of using formulas all to way to some ultra-advanced formula usage. Most likely, if Excel can do it with a formula, this book will teach show you how. This is a *must have* book for anyone who uses Excel on a regular basis. For those who want to become a serious Excel power user, I recommend "Excel 2002 Power Programming with VBA" by the same author. While this book contains some overlapping material, it quickly moves on to teach you how to do some pretty exciting stuff.

Won 8-figure international deal with this book!,

Practical application in minutes! Finally after trying 3 other..."Excel" books I purchased this one, skimmed it and found a ton of useful formulas; grabbed a few and sharpened up a new, international, project proposal to our customer. The book makes it simple to find what you need rapidly. The CDROM includes a PDF copy of the book so you can "take it with you" on your laptop without lugging the text around the globe. Very specific examples; a multitude of professional applications. Recommended for anyone like myself who strives to "work smarter, not harder". I suspected I could do better, and was pleasantly surprised that MSEXCEL2002 had so much more functionality to offer me RIGHT NOW without attending any class or turning myself into a Programmer/Developer. It's surprisingly readable, well organized and applicable in minutes. I hate working with numbers, and yet - this text turned it into a creative process that literally pays off AND I am proud of my work!

Excel Teacher likes this book,

This review is from: Microsoft Excel 2002 Formulas (With CD-ROM) (Paperback)
I teach Excel to IT professionals. I've been using various books for the past 6 years. I wanted one new book that authoritatively lays out the formula stuff you need to know and goes well beyond the usual "repeat the help files" approach. This is the book I bought and use. It's also very useful for pre-2002 Excel.

Chock full of very useful formula tips,

First, please read the title. This book is about Excel formulas. Please don't buy this book if you are looking for a general guide to Excel. For that purpose, you may want to purchase Mr. Walkenbach's Excel 'Bible'.That said, this book is incredibly useful. If you know a little bit about Excel, this book will take you very far. If you know a lot about Excel, you will be astounded by some of the things you can do using the proper formulas. This book is chock-full of great tips that will radically improve your spreadsheets. The section on financial formulas is particularly well-written with plenty of real-life examples. I have been using Excel for Windows since version 2 (circa 1988). This is the best Excel book I have ever purchased. I unreservedly recommend this book to other Excel users.

A strong and comprehensive one-volume guide,

This review is from: Microsoft Excel 2002 Formulas (With CD-ROM) (Paperback)
I work with Excel every day and find myself going to Mr. Walkebach's volume several times a week. While the book is methodocally organized (almost like an intermediate-to-advanced course in Excel), it can be very useful as a reference. The accompanying CD has many useful worksheets and can be very handy! Highly recomended for students and practitioners alike!

Excel is so much easier to work with now,

I would recommend this book to anyone who spends a significant amount of their time working with numbers like I do! I was astonished at the amount of time I was wasting before I read this book, working through the tedious process of setting up long formulas. The book provides numerous tips on getting the work done faster. However, some of the advanced material in the book went right over my head!It was money well spent for me.

OUTSTANDING!,
By Antonios Giannakas (New York, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Microsoft Excel 2002 Formulas (With CD-ROM) (Paperback)
This is the best computer book I have ever read. This book is necessary for someone who wants to be a powerful spreadsheet user. Walkenbach's writing is very interesting (unlike most computer book authors who write in a way targeting nerd audiences only). I would recommend reading the book cover to cover, but you can ignore some of his examples (especiallly those regarding manipulating text). You will enjoy this book and you will be impresssed at how powerfull Excel is.

I rarely write reviews but I have to for this book and author. The book (along with the author's website) has saved me literally hours of researching and creating formulas of my own. I feel bad having to steal formulas from him but oh well, I just don't have time to come up with them by myself. I will certainly purchase more books from John Walkenbach.
