Book Description

HP Technologies July 31, 1998
Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5: Planning, Design and Implementation describes the best practices used during the planning, design, and implementation phases of projects to deploy Microsoft Exchange Server. It incorporates the author's general expertise gained from 16 years working with corporate messaging systems as well as experience gained from enterprise-level projects around the world, including Digital's own deployment of 55,000 Exchange clients across 160 servers. The new functionality of Exchange V5.5 is covered, but the real values lies in the pragmatic and practical attitude taken to solving the problems posed by large-scale implementations of any messaging system.

This book shows system designers, implementation teams, and e-mail administrators what Exchange V5.5 is capable of and where it needs human assistance to succeed.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'I give it a strong thumbs up. Every Exchange manager should grab a copy of this. The best thing about it is that Tony Redmond has done lots and lots of Exchange installations, so the book (or at least the parts I read) is packed with realistic and 'from the trenches' advice...Tony Redmond has a lot of experience and it shows in this book.' - Network World, Inc.

More About the Author

Tony Redmond has been writing about electronic mail since 1992 and is acknowledged to be one of the foremost commentators on Microsoft collaboration technology, chiefly focusing on Microsoft Exchange Server. He retired from HP in March 2010 after spending ten years as a Vice President where he served in various roles such as Chief Technology Officer for HP Services. During his time at Digital Equipment Corporation, Compaq, and HP, Tony had a major influence over the relationship between the services divisions and many Microsoft engineering groups. Tony's books and other writing are based on the lessons learned through working with major customers to deploy technology both successfully and perhaps with less success. The aim is to understand what the technology can do and how best to deploy it to meet business goals.

His latest book is "Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 (including SP1): Inside Out" (ISBN 9780735640610), published by Microsoft Press in December 2010. Tony writes regularly about technology, travel, and rugby refereeing in his blog http://thoughtsofanidlemind.wordpress.com/

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, the best exchange 5.5 book on the market, August 13, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5: Planning, Design and Implementation (HP Technologies) (Paperback)
Well I'm pleased to say that Tony Redmond has produced the best exchange 5.5 book currently available. I work with exchange and recently completed my mcp exams in both exchange 5 and 5.5 so spent a lot of time and money reading lots of exchange material.

There are lots of books out there that claim to be able to give you all the knowledge you need to pass the mcse, what I like about this book is that it is not an mcse book. This book covers exchange in a corporate production environment.

The author goes into the most indepth detail of the exchange architecture that I have ever come across. Utilising his experience at Digital as the world's number one implementor of exchange, he uses many real world examples of how to deploy maintain and support exchange 5.5.

If your going for the exchange mcp exam save your money, don't buy the 101 mcse exchange guides that are out there buy this book. Also if your considering deploying exchange, or are simply a systems person who would like to know more about the product, buy this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars The definitive bible for Exchange by Compaq's Tech. Director, July 9, 1999
This review is from: Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5: Planning, Design and Implementation (HP Technologies) (Paperback)
By now most IT pros know Exchange 5.5 is a vast product. The implications are a "New World Order" for IT. Benefit from Tony's rich experience (he came from Exchange-implementation-award-winning DEC when Compaq bought them, like I did, too). Understand this book is exactly what it says and what you need to do foremost: PLAN! Other books were better at helping me earn by MCSE with Exchange elective. It's the definitive bible for Exchange implementations. I've seen it on more CIO and IT managers' desks than any other single publication.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book around on Exchange, October 13, 1998
This review is from: Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5: Planning, Design and Implementation (HP Technologies) (Paperback)
This is a great book on Exchange. As well as the technical information there's alot of details on how you should design and implement Exchange - and at the same time the author takes the time to explain why. The thing I like best about the book is that whilst Tony Redmond is obviously a fan of Exchange, he is not afraid to point out its limitations.
