5.0 out of 5 stars Oustanding! Amazingly concise, comprehensive!, October 16, 2003
This review is from: Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Administrator's Pocket Consultant (Paperback)
I'm an IT professional and have been reading the new crop of books on Exchange Server 2003. I have to admit, many of the books out there are disappointing but this WAS NOT one of them. I can not express how helpful this book was to me. I can not think of a chapter in this book that I did not learn something from. It was my first Stanek book and I have to say that I wish I found him earlier. This book was well done and worth every penny! Thank you William Stanek for an excellent book!

I found more useful information in this book than any other on the subject. And anyone having trouble finding what they are looking for are unfamiliar with the "index" or they didn't even read this book. As an example, SSL which a previous reviewer says wasn't covered is discussed extensively; it is part of the core discussion on using Virtual Servers with Exchange and that is the subject of no less than two chapters. Similarly, MX records are discussed 4 different times as they relate to various Exchange features. And relay restrictions is covered in several areas and is also part of a 3 pages discussion on setting and using relay restrictions.

I was amazed by how well this book gets across the gist of Exchange so effectively! I thought that the Mailbox Administration, Exchange Client, Mobile Access, and Store Administration coverage was really well done. The Message Transfer and Routing section really saved me too. The back up and recovery coverage, Virtual server, public folders and storage groups explanations were all concise and very comprehensive. A job well done!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great place to start!, October 21, 2003

This review is from: Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Administrator's Pocket Consultant (Paperback)
There were few books for Exchange 2003 on the market when I picked this book up, which I admit was mostly due to economy more than anything. I was taking a 3-day Exchange 2003 'boot camp' at the time, and found the information in just a fraction of this book for more informative than the class itself. This is actually the first computer book that I've felt compelled to read from cover to cover, it's that easy to understand. Anyone interested in a great all-around guide to Exchange would be hard-pressed to top this book.

William Stanek has done an outstanding job with this book. "Exchange 2003 Administrator's Pocket Consultant" provides excellent coverage of Exchange essentials. The information is clear, well organized and focusd on what an administrator needs to know.

Great book for Exchange 2003 administration - deserves more than 5 stars. This is like an Exchange 2003 bible for the task you do every day. I read it cover to cover, buy the book without hesitation.

Great coverage on almost everything about Exchange 2003. Particuarly coverage of client configurations, wireless, web and dial-up access. Excellent coverage of directory services and data store administration. Good coverage of backup and recovery. Great coverage of message transfer, queuing, maintenance and monitoring.

This is not designed as a study guide. But definitely can help you in that aspect, I'm using it as an additional resource.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read, December 16, 2004

In this book Microsoft , takes you all the way from explaining the basic concepts of mail servers and move on to installing, upgrading, migrating and clustering of exchange servers and in a very detailed way with many pictures that helps you understand the product even if you didn't work with it before.
Readers can notice easily the improvements in the MS books released for 2003 products over the ones released before for 2000/NT.
Reading this book will help you for sure do the daily tasks of exchange administration, installing, upgrading, lists, aliases and much more, if you are considering this book for clustering and for advanced recovery techniques you will be disappointed.
Worth reading.

Another fine Pocket Consultant from William Stanek. Clear, Concise, and encyclopedic in scope. This "Pocket" book is designed to serve as a reference for common and not so common procedural tasks. It is also great for learning Exchange. I used this book to get Exchange up and running in minimum time. As with most of his other "Pocket" references, Mr. Stanek does a very thorough job of documenting tasks in a highly organized manner. You will get more out of this book in a few days than you will combing the newsgroups for months and months. I haven't found a daily administration question this book didn't answer. I keep a copy in my backpack so I have it always with me. This is a book you will find yourself referring to on a daily basis. With Amazon dropping the price by 30%, it is a deal that cannot be beat! Very highly recommended!

This review is from: Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Administrator's Pocket Consultant (Paperback)
This book can be read and understood by Exchange Vets or newbies...it covers basics and more complicated matters in a format that is easy to look up when an issue arises. No one can remember how to do everything but you can use this manual as your backup and make it appear you know it all.

I have Stanek's Exchange 2000 book and bought this as soon as I saw it without hesitation. Again, I found this book to be well organized and well presented. It is clear that a lot of thought went into the planning and writing this book. The writing is clear and there's a lot of useful information. I highly recommmend it. Kudos to the author!

5.0 out of 5 stars Recommended to anyone who admins Exchange, October 15, 2003

This review is from: Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Administrator's Pocket Consultant (Paperback)
Exchange Server 2003 Administrator's Pocket Consultant is exceptionally well written. Do not be influenced by the few negative reviews seen here on Amazon. I picked this text up at Barnes & Noble and spent an hour with it before biuying it and leaving the store. I am a CCNA, MCSE, and A+, and I have developed a much greater understanding of Exchange by reading William Stanek's book.

I liked the straightforward no nonsense approach to problem solving and feature implementation. This is one book you can read from cover to cover. The book excels as a technical reference as well, giving the reader pertinent information quickly, with good tips and great real world advice. I especially appreciated the comprehensive coverage of mobile access.

This is a must book for anyone who admins Exchange. The best how to for daily operations and fast answers.

I've found that pretty much anything that has William Stanek's name on it is very good. AND this book exceeded my expectations. It answered many questions, solved many problems, and it fits nicely in my backpack. I don't know what the previous reviewer was moking, but this book IS very well organized, and clearly worded. It is in fact a pleasure to read and the author's knowledge and devotion to the subject come shining through. If you need admin Exchange Server then you must buy this book. Thanks for a great book William!

5.0 out of 5 stars The most helpful book I've ever read on Exchange, July 18, 2004
By
This review is from: Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Administrator's Pocket Consultant (Paperback)
If you use Exchange, you need this book. Period. All the new 2003 features are covered. Beginners will find everything they need to get going, while experienced admins will find things they didn't know. (For example, why and how you set RTS values for the X.400 MTA or to configure Outlook Mobile/Web access for firewalls in multiserver configurations).

The book even teaches configuring mail support for Outlook and Outlook express. Everything from IMAP to POP3 configuration, accessing multiple mailboxes, delegating access permissions.

I'm an die-hard GUI hacker, and the book discusses that, but also goes deep into the details. The books gives pointers on mobile access, web access and all the related wireless issues. It even discusses RPC over HTTP. The most detailed discussion on the data store I've found. Everything you'd expect on storage groups, mailbox stores, public stores, content indexing, replicating public folders.

This is an excellent book and I recommend it very highly.
