2.0 out of 5 stars Confusing, frustrating, and time-consuming, November 15, 2007

This review is from: Microsoft Expression Web Step by Step (Microsoft) (Paperback)
After I brought the Microsoft Expression Web program, the first books that I brought dealt with coding, i.e. "HTML & XHTML with CSS" by Elisabeth Freeman & Erick Freeman, HTLML, XHTML & CSS Visual Quickstart Guide by Elizabeth Castro, "CSS: The Definitive Guide" by Eric Meyer. After that, I wanted to more specifically learn how to use the Expression Web program, so I purchased Nolan Hester's "Microsoft Expression Web Visual Quickstart Guide," and "Using Microsoft Expression Web" by Jim Cheshire, and this book, "Microsoft Expression Web Step-by-Step."

Although, no book is perfect, Chapter 1 in "Microsoft Expression Web Step-by-Step" was a big disappointment. Many of the directions are incomplete, and the illustrations in the book don't coincide with what is shown in the lesson files. This is confusing, frustrating, and time- consuming.

1.0 out of 5 stars worthless or worse, February 18, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Microsoft Expression Web Step by Step (Microsoft) (Paperback)
This Step-by-step book is not step-by-step. There are no clearly defined terms, no attendant images, way too many assumptions and the author in general couldn't teach a sack to hold air. If you want to waste your money, buy this book. Otherwise, look elsewhere. It got one star just because I couldn't post this with no star.

Basically this is a book which would like to help previous MS Frontpage user sto migrate to Expression web. This book would guide you through some basics of the software. However some of the illustrations are not clear enough. Not exactly a "Step by Step" book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing, January 14, 2008

This review is from: Microsoft Expression Web Step by Step (Microsoft) (Paperback)
This is the 3rd Step-By-Step book I've purchased. The book has several mistakes where it instructs you to do something that doesn't work, i.e., 'click' when it should have said 'double-click'. Descriptions on where to position the cursor to perform certain tasks in a lesson are often vague causing confusion and wasted time. It's almost as if the book had not been edited or had someone walk through the lessons. My experience with other Microsoft SBS books have been very good; so, this is very disappointing.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great way to move away from Front Page, December 7, 2007
This review is from: Microsoft Expression Web Step by Step (Microsoft) (Paperback)
While Front Page has been a favored WYSIWG for many years, it was highly criticized by many for its "unique" code and lack of strong CSS support. Now with Expression Web, users can start gaining a better understanding of actual code and really harness the power of CSS.

This book takes a very hands-on approach to take the user step-by-step (just as the title promises) through the use of this popular program. It's self-paced layout and accompanying CD is well thought out and easy to understand. Great for novices but a good resource for anyone who wants to learn more about Expression Web.

2.0 out of 5 stars Dissapointed step by step, December 20, 2007
This review is from: Microsoft Expression Web Step by Step (Microsoft) (Paperback)
First off, I'm a novice at web design.. though I have built a few sites with Frontpage in the past. Given it's name, "Step By Step" I was expecting a book that would guide me through Expression Web simply and logicaly. While there is a lot good information in this book, it's not presented in an orderly and logical fashion. It's difficult to use, the instructions are sometimes incomplete, and the author assumes a fair amount of experience on the part of the reader.

2.0 out of 5 stars Definitely not step by step for beginners, July 7, 2011
This review is from: Microsoft Expression Web Step by Step (Microsoft) (Paperback)
I bought this book because of the title and table of contents. At 93 pages into it I had a horrible headache. This is definitely not a book for beginners and assumes the user has web design knowledge. The huge downloads for the exercises were awful and to me provided nothing to learning. It was difficult even to get those in the right place to open. Some never did. Some of the instructions are simply wrong for ME4 and as beginners, we don't need to be changing the settings of anything because we don't know what we're doing, especially in the early section dealing with PHP. The author just throws in abbreviations with no explanations. Found another source that from page one had me opening up a site and changing background color, doing my first CSS with full beginner instructions that make sense.

The book was priced extremely low, but there was no indication that the CD was missing. Without the practice and learning files contained on the CD, the book is essentially worthless.
