4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners, but 2 superficial
This book is probably the best book you can buy if are new to web authorng and FP. I learned everything in this book in 4 days, and I now feel I need a more comprehensive book in order to use advance features such as script editor and database integration. If you are a beginner BUY IT NOW, but remember you will soon need another book in order to master FP techniques.

2.0 out of 5 stars Covers many advanced features while neglecting a few basics.
I have worked through most of this book, and while the lessons are helpful, where are the instructions for creating buttons? It never tells you how you can use graphics, etc. from the web. I discovered "Image Composer" (which apparently is a graphics program included with FrontPage 2000) completely by accident. The book never even mentions that it exists...

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful intro to FrontPage 2000, May 18, 2000
This review is from: Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Step by Step (Step by Step (Microsoft)) (Paperback)
When reviewed in the context in which this book was written, as an introduction for those who have no web-development or FP2000 experience, this book delivers. I had no experience prior to opening this book. When I completed this book, I felt I had a good introduction and was left with a desire to pursue the subject further. This book does not pretend to be a reference for experienced users, but to walk new users (hence the "Step-by-Step" name) through an introduction. Mission accomplished!

I discovered "Image Composer" (which apparently is a graphics program included with FrontPage 2000) completely by accident. The book never even mentions that it exists. I am now in the process of looking for a book that includes instructions on "Image Composer." It looks like one can use it to work with graphics, and buttons, etc. in FrontPage 2000.

1.0 out of 5 stars If you want to be a FrontPage expert, do not buy this book., October 23, 2001

This review is from: Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Step by Step (Step by Step (Microsoft)) (Paperback)
I purchased this book because this was made by Microsoft Press, hoping that this book has a complete information on using FrontPage 2000. However, upon completion of reading and following procedures on every single page in 2 days, I found that it only covers certain basic features and does not cover any of the advanced features. (e.g. editing frames, creating search menus, using data base, displaying and replying to comments, etc.) I have to buy another book on FrontPage and wasted money and time on this book. If you want to be a FrontPage expert, do not buy this book, but buy the book with more detailed explanation on advanced features. (Running FrontPage 2000 from Microsoft or FrontPage 2000 Bible from IDG are good choices.)

4.0 out of 5 stars Just the Book for a Newbie, April 1, 2001
This review is from: Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Step by Step (Step by Step (Microsoft)) (Paperback)
Learn by doing. This book leads you through a series of exercises and reviews which teach you the basics of FrontPage 2000. There are some missing areas (buttons has been mentioned), but for a beginner the book can give you the confidence to construct a moderately sophisticated web site.

I read through the book and completed the exercises within a weekend. The exercises use files included on the accompanying CD-ROM as starting points, and lead you through modifications and enhancements. There are some AVI files on the CD showing some of the techniques in video.

A big plus, if you are on the fence about using FrontPage 2000, is that there is a 45-day demo of this program on the CD. During the demo period you may use the unrestricted program to determine whether you want to buy your own version.

As has been stated, you will probably have to buy a more advanced book if you will be doing heavy programming, but for beginners, this is the one to get.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great Program, Vice Versa on the book, April 9, 2000
This review is from: Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Step by Step (Step by Step (Microsoft)) (Paperback)
This book can only be reccommended to people that have never used a computer before. Step By Step will tell you how to make a fake site. That's great, except if you're trying to make a real site, this book is useless. It's worse than useless if you're trying to use it at a refrence. I highly reccomend Running FrontPage 2000 by Jim Buyens, as it covers much more of the program including DHTML, Script Editor, and Image Composer, which isn't mentioned in this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Only for absolute beginners, April 29, 2003
By
The Alchemist "alchemista" (Orlando, FL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Step by Step (Step by Step (Microsoft)) (Paperback)
Although the book description says it is for beginning to advanced users, this books is really only for absolute beginners to web publishing and to Windows apps as well.

This book is really just a collection of examples (hence the step-by-step) to walk you through. However, the text is probably 3 times longer than it needs to be. The book repeats very simple steps (do you really need to show the user how to go to File...Save in every single example?) in all the examples and also pointless steps. For example, many of the examples have the same two or three steps to open the file (click on open, highlight a file, press OK). These steps could be combined into one in future examples.

Further proof is that there is a whole Appendix on an intro to Windows. For example, how to click with a mouse, open and close windows, etc.

Overall this book should probably be called Frontpage for Dummies. If you are an absolute beginner to Windows applications and web publishing, this book would be good for you to get going quickly with Frontpage. However, if you are already comfortable with Windows applications or you have done any sort of web design, this book is simply too beginner.

I'm giving it 2 stars only because it would be good for absolute beginner. However, it is misleading to say it is from beginner to advanced. If the book clearly stated it was only for beginners or was called something like Frontpage for Dummies, I would rate it higher.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good book for beginning to medium level users, February 7, 2000

This review is from: Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Step by Step (Step by Step (Microsoft)) (Paperback)
I bought this book and create frontpage web pages in a week end. I thought that this was the better book. It is a great begining book but also expands on the basics enought to allow you to get a good grasp of frontpage. I would rate thid book as well worth the money. It is a good starting place, but it can also be used to the benefit of more advanced web designers.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Step by Step (Step by Step (Microsoft)) (Paperback)
This is a very helpful introduction to Frontpage 2000. I completed most of it in about a week and continue to return to it as a reference. Working through the exercises on the accompanying CD-ROM gives the reader a good initial orientation to FP 2000 and a sense of what you can do with the product.
