Book Description

Microsoft Mastering September 25, 1999
This Microsoft Mastering learning system features a variety of tools and building blocks to help developers build and deploy their first working applications in Visual Basic 6.0. Students get the practical, skills-focused instruction they need -- how and when they need it -- through a combination of text-based and interactive lessons, narrated demonstrations, and hands-on labs. The instructional modules step learners through each part of the Visual Basic event-driven development process, providing hands-on programming experience through the accompanying lab exercises. By the end of the course, students have created an application with a graphic user interface, menus, forms, controls, input validation, simple database access, and drag-and-drop functionality -- ready to run.

2.0 out of 5 stars Decent, but very expensive, January 11, 2000
This review is from: Microsoft Mastering: Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 Fundamentals (Paperback)
Basically, you get 14 short chapters totalling 350 or so pages, much of which is taken up with "Labs" or exercises (whichare actually decent learning tools)--plus a couple of appendices. Youget the annoyingly overused phrase "This topic is beyond the scope of this book . . .", and you get the occasional maddening omission. For example, the book lists different variable types, then says (and I quote): "For more information about Visual Basic data types, search for 'Declaring Variables with Data Types' in MSDN Help."

Now, Data Types is a pretty important topic. Would it have been too much to spend two pages going over the various data types and discussing the difference between an Integer and a Long Integer? The book again and again refers you to the online help for answers that should appear in the book itself, as if the authors were trying to pull it in under a page limitation.

The accompanying CD is decent, too, but the embedded movies kept crashing my browser (IE 5.0). Go figure.

For significantly less, you can get Visual Basic 6 from the Ground Up, or the John Smiley intro to Visual Basic. Both are far more comprehensive.

1.0 out of 5 stars Utter rubbish, February 5, 2001

Don't buy this book - it's absolutely awful. Honestly, for that kind of money you'd expect somethings usable, but far from it. Explanations are always unclear and either oversimplistic or full of holes. Often new properties/methods etc are enumerated without being explained. You'd be FAR better off with the Dummies book, which, if you can get over the style, actually has plenty of good content. Microsoft are taking serious liberties with this one. One star? More like minus 5.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a book for beginners..., September 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Microsoft Mastering: Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 Fundamentals (Paperback)
I origionally bought this book as a suppliment to the Halvorson book, thinking it would give me a more solid foundation. I stopped reading the book at chapter 3. The book assumes the reader knows certian basics that many beginners do not know. I also found it frustrating flipping to the back for "Hints" which are nothing more than the answers and information you need hidden at the back of the book.
