Customer Reviews

This book helped me understand Office 2010.
Thomas G. McCallie
It doesn't always help me solve the problem immediately in front of me, but at least it gives me an idea of how difficult the problem actually is.
S. Morgan
I find the information useful, easy to find and sometimes entertaining to read.

Ed Bott and Carl Siechert make a terrific team providing clear susinct technical writing. This book is no exception.

Having said that, I am gravely disappointed by the publisher's marketing move. All the Inside-Out books published by Microsoft Press (O'Reilly) used to come with a CD containing the full book in electronic form. Honestly, my collection of Inside-Out books gather dust on the shelves, but the searchable electronic copies are on my notebook harddrive whenever and wherever I need them. With THIS book, O'Reilly makes the electronic version of the book available as an online web site - but ONLY after you create an account with O'Reilly's Safari Library. You also get free 'Tips', which is a thinly disguised way to market you for more books. I don't always have fast Internet access, and sometimes such access might cost me as much as I paid for the book. If you want to put a copy of the book on your harddrive - pony up for a subscription - the cost of the book no longer includes local electronic storage rights.

It looks like O'Reilly is following the path blazed by the airlines by unbundling services and charging additional fees. Come on! Charge a fair price for the book and give me the electronic version! As a business traveller I'm waiting for the hotel industry to jump on board this sad trend and put coin operated toilet paper dispensers in their rooms.

To anyone who has purchased past series titles, definitely get this here. This book is several hundred pages thinner, and in the biggest change, there is no CD included. There has always been a CD with the Windows and Office versions in the past. Still a good book, but not so good a buy anymore.

Good basic overview and reference of Office 2010. On line access to electronic edition is not clear or easily accomplished, so my assessment relates to the printed book only. If you want to install and be guided through the most common features of Office 2010, this will do a good job. I've since purchased the Outlook Bible (written) and an electronic version of Excel to get to the detailed feature use I was looking for. I would have purchased individual Word, Excel, and Outlook publications as these programs were of the greatest interest to me and I was looking for more detail and application of feature examples than were provided.

I am reviewing the Kindle edition of this book and giving 5 stars on balance. The bad news? The index on Kindle is unformatted and pretty useless, although if you find your topic, clicking will navigate close to the relevant text. The text refers to page numbers which Kindle DX does not support. The screen shots mostly are unreadable to my eyes. The good news? You can set up a Kindle library on your computer(don't ask me how, my octogenarian mind has forgotten)and the cover picture of the book appears there. Click this to download the full text to this library in a minute or two (yes all 1000 plus pages) and Eureka! the graphics are just readable; the index is formatted; and headings appear in color. Both location and page number appear on the bottom of the screen albeit in miniscule font. Navigation is easy , click on the main Table of Contents, click on the desired section such as Word, and in the section Contents click on the topic heading; you will be transferred to there. It is easier to navigate than having to flip the pages of a book. It is also easier to read the book on your monitor and you can have your project on a second monitor and just look up the information as required on the first monitor. You can also have two columns to a page. On both Kindle and your monitor you can zoom the font to your liking. As for the text itself? A few errors but fabulous information!

They can't really claim it's office 2010 inside out and not even include all the software. Only reason I bought this overpriced how-to manual was Office 2010 software has Access and Publisher, the two main programs i'll be using in my studies this next year, only to find out the book doesn't include the only two programs I need. Now i'll have to fork over another $30+ for an access book. Thanks for nothing. Just wasted $33.

I am trying to use this book to actually learn how to use Microsoft Excel 2010. Big mistake. Over and over again all I am finding is a nice marketing-type description of all the wonderful things you could do, then a brief introduction about a topic, then an example showing all kinds of things that weren't even mentioned, and then they move on. Very few details are actually explained. For instance, they mention "structured references" twice without ever explaining what the hell they are, how to write or read them. I dare anyone to be able to figure out how to actually do a pivot table using just this book. This book tells less than what is in the help files. And that is saying something.

I still prefer Inside Out to other Office books. I find the information useful, easy to find and sometimes entertaining to read. Disappointed CD was left out, made it easy to carry the book with me. I bought this version knowing there was no CD, so the book obviously stands on its own as a worth wile purchase. Microsoft Office 2010 Inside Out
