More About the Author

Hi. I've been writing about Macs, other computers, and software since dinosaurs ruled the earth. OK, it's actually been since 1987. I began writing for the late MacGuide magazine, and started writing for Macworld shortly thereafter. I was a Contributing Editor at Macworld from 1990 through 2004, when they noticed that I hadn't written anything for them in the past year (I'd been really busy writing books). We parted on good terms, and I still write for them. Over the years, I've also written for most of the other Mac magazines.

I wrote my first solo book in 1994, and wrote my first commercially successful book in 1997, JavaScript for the Web, Visual QuickStart Guide, written with my then girlfriend and now wife, Dori Smith. That book has been in print ever since, though we've revised it many times to match the growth of JavaScript and other Web technologies. As you can see on this page, I've written or co-written many more books, notably on Dreamweaver, Apple's Keynote, and the Microsoft Office programs.

In late 1999, we moved from the Los Angeles area to the Sonoma wine country. It's a better place to live in general and was a fine place to raise our son. Now that he's grown, it's just us and our very excellent cat, Pixel, who always makes an appearance in each book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Worth the Money!!!, November 24, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Microsoft Office 98 for Macs for Dummies (Paperback)
I had much higher expectations for this book...perhaps too high. Normally the Dummies line is rather well thought out and explains most application attributes fairly well. I found this book to be dull, lifeless, and the author focusing more on humor than useful information to keep his reader from putting down this book. One major gripe is in the area on the "mail merge" function as it relates to "envelopes and labels." The explanation of this function becomes too hairy even for experienced computer users, and needs to be revised extensively. If you have no other recourse, this book will, at least, get you started. However, if you need something with a little more bite...I'd recommend the Visual QuickStart Guide.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for Beginners, August 11, 1998

This review is from: Microsoft Office 98 for Macs for Dummies (Paperback)
I would rank this book as good. I don't believe it was aimed at the "high-end" of Office users, so I would have to say it accomplished what it set out to do: give a basic, easy to follow introduction to Office 98. However, if you learn fast or require a little more depth, you might consider something else. All in all a solid introduction, however.

1.0 out of 5 stars Too hard to follow., June 29, 1999

It's a stream of consciousness, confusing to follow. It was hard to learn even basic information on any task.
