4.0 out of 5 stars Excel 2007
This book is great for those of us who are new to Office 2007. I recommend getting this over a computer manual. This provides step-by-step instructions on how to use Excel 2007 (including Macros). It also provides lots of excercises in the back of each chapter to reinforce your learning. The instructions are very easy to follow. One draw-back is that it is a bit...

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty and Wordy
This book appears to cover just about everything. It looks nice, has color pictures, repetitive charts and tables, and side bars, lots of side bars. And afterthoughts on the sidebars.

It is very wordy and one will probably be yawning quite a bit from looking at it.

This book does excel(no pun intended) on the pre-process of making workbooks. It shows...

I've only done three chapters to date, but I feel this textbook is one of the best I've used for a computer program. The lessons are clearly written and illustrated, and the problems are challenging yet do-able. The on-line tests make me go back to the textbook for information I missed. I highly recommend this textbook.

5.0 out of 5 stars It is a good book, September 22, 2009

It is a good book to learn about Excel. It is truly a comprehensive book. Although it is too wordy. There is too much explanation. I would prefer something that is more to the point and takes less learning time.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty and Wordy, July 1, 2010

This book appears to cover just about everything. It looks nice, has color pictures, repetitive charts and tables, and side bars, lots of side bars. And afterthoughts on the sidebars.

It is very wordy and one will probably be yawning quite a bit from looking at it.

This book does excel(no pun intended) on the pre-process of making workbooks. It shows the questions that need to be asked and how to go about laying the requirements out. For some, though, this will be a tedious venture to go through since most of this information will already be provided in many real life scenarios.

This book has a pretty steep $100 price and one might think this would come with a back massage or the ability to wash the dishes. Most people could probably get by with a $30 Visual Quickstart book or something of the like.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay, but not very real-world, May 12, 2011

This book was assigned for an online Excel class that I took through the local junior college. The instructions are clearly written and easy to follow, but I found (and my instructor agreed) that the book doesn't prepare students to work in Excel on their own, it only teaches us how to do the examples in the book. Our class went through the entire book and I finished every assignment with good grades and feedback from the instructor. Despite all that, I was totally flumoxed by the independent final project. Very frustrating after having spent 3 months trying to learn how to use the program!

I recommend the Go! series of MS books, and the New Perspectives books are very good, too. They leave the reader with more usable knowledge after completing the exercises in the texts.

2.0 out of 5 stars Required textbook (but not very good), September 1, 2010
This review is from: Microsoft Office Excel 2007: Comprehensive Concepts and Techniques (Shelly Cashman Series) (Paperback)
This book was required for a college online class. I too, find the presentation haphazard for retaining the knowledge. If you have never used Excel, it's probably a good book. It is comprehensive, however the instruction could be condensed and better organized for learning to use Excel. I also think the "other ways" to perform various functions are easier to retain than the step-by-step presentation in each chapter. For class assignments, the Quick Reference Summary is far more helpful than info contained in each chapter. Surely teachers and professors can find a better (and less expensive) textbook to use!
