Platform for Display:PC/Mac Key Card|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
As a long-time Microsoft Office user, I was very hesitant to make a jump to a subscription product, finally the opportunity to edit my files on my iPhone and iPad convinced me to make the jump, against my better judgment. Now a few months in, I'm very glad that I did.

First, let me speak to buying a subscription key card from Amazon: NO BRAINER! At the time of writing this review, you will definitely save money: At the time of writing, you can save $20 for a year on the personal card and $32.50 on the home card. It is the exact same product as if you buy a download, you just save money (although you do have to wait a couple of days for the shipment).

Should you get personal or home? I can see only one situation in which home is a good idea: If you are single, have only one computer, and only one mobile device (tablet or smartphone). With home, you get a subscription to install the office suite on only one computer and only one mobile device (iOS or Android). The home subscription will get you five times the subscription for only $17.50 more. When you purchase a subscription key, you still download office, but you download it from Microsoft's website and register it with the code on the key card.

What do you get? With a personal subscription you get an installation of Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, and OneNote. If you run a PC (not a Mac) you also get Publisher & Access. The absence of these two programs is one of the reasons I dropped the rating to four stars. I can speak to the iOS side of things: You also get a very good iPad version of Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and OneNote. One the iPhone you get a less featured "Office Mobile" app that lets you open Word, Excel, and Powerpoint files and create new Word and Excel files.

1.0 out of 5 stars Maybe it works just fine; on my PC, a disaster August 21, 2014
Platform for Display:PC/Mac Key Card|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
When I found out that I had the chance to try Office 365 I was excited. As a Vine member, these products are provided for our use and evaluation. My plan was to keep the Office 2010 that I had paid for, and then run Office 365 concurrently to see how much I liked the product. I mean normally, in Windows, you get to take their installation, or choose a different folder for the installation. 25 years of Windows background, this should be a piece of cake, right?

Wrong. Very, very wrong.

The damage that this program has done to my my windows setup is amazing.

Everything now defaults to this new office suite with no way to redirect "docx" files back to WORD 2010. While WORD 2010 is still fully functional on my computer, the executable has been renamed WINWORD.exe and it cannot be renamed or restored. Furthermore, even the techs at Microsoft have no way to undo the damage with the file association.

In the short time I did play with Office 365, I found it annoying to have to input passwords. I also find it annoying that one does not buy the program, but one subscribes to it. Meaning that Microsoft has found a way to bleed customers dry over the long haul instead in one chunk.

The final nail in the coffin is the issue of connectivity, which 365 needs.

I really was excited about this program. What I am not excited about is how on installation now means that my evening is spent fixing this nightmare by deleting it, and then reinstalling Office 2010.

As for my copy - I am mailing it back to Microsoft in Redmond, with a detailed letter on what it did to my PC, why I will not be installing it on my Mac Book, and why I will not recommend it to anyone.

Consumer, consider yourself warned: this product is garbage.

Platform for Display:PC/Mac Key Card|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
The current trend for software companies is to provide "software as a service" (SaaS) where the user licenses an application for a finite amount of time. There are pros and cons for the user here - since ownership is established via your Microsoft account (yes, you'll need one if you don't already have one), you don't need to worry about holding physical discs or keys; you don't pay for it longer than you need it; you can more easily use it on a variety of devices (mostly Microsoft tablets - check their website for list of compatible iPads and OS version).

This pricing model could work well for apps with specific uses that would otherwise be overly expensive, e.g. Photoshop (Adobe also rolled out this SaaS plan later year to much anguish). However, for the basic word processing, spreadsheet and presentation uses that most people look to Office for, this model could actually turn out to be more expensive in the long run. Put another way, most people are likely using a version of Office that is many years old and that's still fine for their simple uses - that Word 2007 (or even 97!) that you purchased for perpetuity still lets you type, format and print those handful of letters that you need to create each year. So I believe that only power users of Word, Excel and/orPowerPoint and/or homes with multiple PCs would really benefit from the SaaS pricing model. Others will likely be frustrated when forced to fork over a subscription fee every 12 months. Microsoft packages some online goodies to soften this blow - Skype minutes and 20GB of online storage - but many either won't use this or will know that there are cheaper/free ways to get the same elsewhere.

Installation was as straightforward as any Microsoft install.
