Update: Microsoft updated the Office 2013 license. You may now transfer the software to another computer that belongs to you, but not more than one time every 90 days (except due to hardware failure, in which case you may transfer sooner). If you transfer the software to another computer, that other computer becomes the "licensed computer." The Office 365 Subscription products work on up to 5 PCs, Macs, and select mobile devices without license transferability limitations.

I purchased this product and was redirected to Microsoft Office to provide my student email and verify I'm a student. I was then able to create an account on Microsoft's website and download the product directly through Microsoft. When I went to install the product after the download, I was asked to provide an activation key. They key I initially provided was the one of my software download orders page on Amazon, to which it told me the key was invalid. I became frustrated and started reading all these reviews and horror stories, so I immediately called Microsoft (I don't recommend this, as I was transferred to 3 different departments and wound up figuring out the problem on my own). YOU CANNOT USE THE PRODUCT KEY AMAZON PROVIDES. It won't work. You need to choose the second option when you're installing the product. I don't remember the exact wording, but it's along the lines of using your Microsoft account. It will ask you to enter the email address you provided to create your Microsoft account and the password. Installing the product this way worked perfectly!

Thus, I am focusing on the pros and cons of "renting" vs. "buying" as I experienced them with installing and using this version of Office and its ancillary products on my Mac system. Overall, I was satisfied with Office 365, as compared with my existing Office 2008 for Mac suite. Although there are noticeable enhancements, there was nothing particularly amazing.
The quick takeaway: Although I appreciate some of the enhancements, if acquiring a timed-use key were the only way I could get this newer version of Office, I would not upgrade from Office 2008. This is because I need heavy, ongoing access to the Office suite. When I need to upgrade my earlier version of Office, I will pay the differential for a "permanent" purchase, even though I successfully activated this four-year subscription. Please see the "Cautions" section of my review for the reasons -- there are several issues that Microsoft hasn't addressed.Read more ›

This is the ONLY purchase on Amazon that you should definitely not make. I am fed up with this. Just read all the other reviews. There are as many 0 star reviews as all other reviews combined.
Nearly a month later, IT'S STILL THEFT!!!! AMAZON AND MICROSOFT ARE ABSOLUTELY AT FAULT HERE. I have to call in Microsoft every time I restart my computer because the Microsoft programs won't open and the product key still doesn't work.
This is the absolute worst purchase ever.
And Amazon should be ashamed. Microsoft should be ashamed.
DO NOT PURCHASE THIS PRODUCT.
ISSUE #2 They recommend a minimum RAM for this, I think 1GB. My laptop has 8GB of RAM, and it still slowed down considerably when Microsoft Word was running and I was trying to edit pictures in a document. Clearly this product was designed for almost only the high-end laptops, and even barely for those.
ISSUE #3 Instead of installing the product and downloading the occasional service pack like with previous versions, this version has you download the software from the Internet (which takes a couple hours on a 1gbps Ethernet connection) and then downloads updates as they arrive. This creates major issues for the program. For the past several days it's told me to "click here to install updates" (a bubble at the bottom of the screen where the clock is). So I click it and it disappears without doing anything. Finally, yesterday it decided to install the updates. Normally when a program updates one needs to restart their computer. However, it never told me, so I didn't. I tried using Office, and it told me that it had "stopped working". So I tried to do the built-in "repair", which froze on "quick repair". I Ctrl+Shift+Esc to close the program and had to restart my computer.Read more ›
