4.0 out of 5 stars Great Start with New Software, July 19, 2008
This review is from: Microsoft Office 2007 for Windows (Paperback)
The thought of having to re-learn something that was challenging in the first place is daunting. New users of Office 2007 may have trouble finding common menu commands or favorite features. A good road map that is easy to understand and follow is certainly a help. Peachpit Press has a solution that is worth looking into.
When you first launch the new version of Microsoft Office, you may be surprised and, well, a little lost. For one thing, there are no menus (and no more Clippy animations). Tiny transparent toolbars seem to pop up all over the place. It seems hopeless to find commands and buttons. Peachpit Press has anticipated all of this in its book. It is a small, comfortable, book that gives concise information in an easy to understand manner.
The book clearly explains specific features of each program, with illustrations running along every margin. I found this helpful, as I learn by seeing, and can easily compare the book to what's on screen.
The book is useful whether or not you have all of the programs written about on your computer. In fact, you will soon realize that it is helpful on its own and can refer to older software as well. After all, Microsoft Office has not changed; only the interface.
Office Applications Covered are: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, and Publisher. Access has been omitted from this particular reference.
Most of us are familiar enough with these programs and the common user interface to have a broad idea of what is covered. The author ensures that the material is what we would normally do; the topics are geared to how we work. Readers will appreciate the straightforward manner of the writing.
If you have been using the computer for any length of time, you know there is always something new to learn. There are a plentitude of tips and tricks included in each chapter. This would make the book worthwhile even for users of previous versions.
The truth is most club members are using Office 2003, the penultimate version of this software. However, as time goes by, the new version of the Office System will become prominent. It pays to be prepared so that we can continue to work without interruption.
If you are in need of a book to learn the new programs, or want to review the changes or even are a beginner, this book is a good solution. I recommend it and hope that we all somehow survive this new iteration of some favorite, some not so favorite features of the Microsoft Office System.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helps make sense of Office 2007, April 2, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Microsoft Office 2007 for Windows (Paperback)
I volunteered to be one of the first in my office to migrate to Office 2007. WOW! The more I use it the more I like it HOWEVER... the learning curve is steep. The visual interface (which was long over due for a overhaul) is vastly different. I firmly believe that to survive the migration to Office 2007 good resources are a must.

This book is well organized, has a great index, and clearly written. This book can be a great resource for novice office users as well as those of us that are very familiar with previous releases of Office.

I've had it only a few days and turn to it whenever I get stuck on how to locate a function that I am familiar with. Already I feel my understanding of the `look and feel' of this new interface has grown immensely.

5.0 out of 5 stars not a work book, October 5, 2008

This is not a workbook. This shows you where to find a tool and how to use it. It is very precise, very helpful for intermediate and advanced users.
