This book helps the novice user with little Microsoft Office experience figure out PowerPoint sufficiently to pass the Microsoft PowerPoint 97 Expert User exam and gain a valuable professional rating. Exam Prep: Microsoft PowerPoint 97 will work equally well for independent students and students who are working with an instructor.
This thin volume doesn't delve too deeply into the capabilities of PowerPoint, but its coverage ought to be enough for the exam. If you're looking for an all-inclusive text, look elsewhere, but this book makes a fine introduction to PowerPoint for the newcomer. Its color illustrations, step-by-step procedures, and plentiful labels make this book easy to absorb.
The author focuses mainly on general PowerPoint skills, such as creating and editing slide-show style presentations. He thoroughly covers charts, graphs, and object linking and embedding (OLE) technology--the most advanced subject here. The book's exercises drive skills into readers' long-term memory. The author describes some exercises in procedural detail but leaves others as tasks for the reader to figure out.
An excellent companion CD-ROM adds a great deal of value to this book. Animations on the CD-ROM demonstrate "click this, then click that" procedures, which you can then practice in a mock-up PowerPoint environment. Quizzes follow, with the option of submitting responses to an instructor via a network. Be aware, though, that the software on the CD-ROM will not install under Windows NT.

David W. Beskeen (Pleasanton, CA) is a co-owner of Perspection, Inc., a company that produces computer training books. He has also authored or packaged over 20 books for the retail, corporate, and education markets since 1992, including Microsoft PowerPoint 97 Exam Prep.

The material is presented and organized in an easy-to-read format. All aspects of PPT 97 are covered well enough for you to then be able to answer ANY question on the test. I even learned a few things that I didn't even know PPT 97 was even able to do! I highly recommend this book.--Pete Lyons
