Another excellent Inside Out book,

This review is from: Microsoft Project Version 2002 Inside Out (Inside Out (Microsoft)) (Paperback)
I really like all the Inside Out books, in part because they are well written with useful screen shots that walk you through the application, and also because they each include an eBook. This means you can have the entire book on your laptop wherever you go. I find its search engine to be a disppointment, but all I want is the book on my hard drive. But more important, the content is outstanding, with many screen shots and associated annotation that take you through the whole product. A great deal is about Project 2002 the client, and then Project Server for web access. Both are done in depth. I also like the highlighting of new features in 2002. In using Project 2002, I have come across features I thought were really cool, only to find it was in Project 2000! For those who want to identify the new features and test them, this book isolates them quite well with special icons. Included are chapters on VBA for customization, as well as how to install Server. It really is a field manual. The CD includes some additional software that is useful, but not a reason to buy the book. I downloaded the QuantumPM Schedule Auditor for example, and found it quite useful. The book does not get into talk about how to do project management or best practices,as some software application books do, so if you want to focus just on the software, this book does that.

Highly Recommended!!!,

I've used MS project for over a decade, I've probably tossed more books than I can count over the years -- I recommended "teach yourself" 98 and bought for my project team, was using the Que book for deep reseach then. Would have bought Que again but not avaialble, so I bought this a year a go, have used when needed for reference. Yesterday doing research decide to load the cd, uh duh!!!, why didn't I do that a year ago -- the eBook is excellent, most of the material of the text, e-searchable, good search engine. This is a real time saver!!!! The diagrams pop in a browser window for better viewing, page back and forth through a topic -- my gad, I can skim the whole book in a couple hours w/ebook. I only wish it had bookmarks -- other than that, I'm thrilled, I can read/prep on the plane/hotel. This and my e-PMBOK will be with me always. And for any like me neglecting to load the cd -- the Visio demo shouldn't be missed. Had been using Visio for importing and creating gantt/timelines -- the quick demo, though light, even helped improve my proficency in those efforts. If you're a senior PM having to train/ramp up associate PMs, this is an asset not to be missed.

From Beginner to Intermediate,
By KenP (Northbridge, Mass) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Microsoft Project Version 2002 Inside Out (Inside Out (Microsoft)) (Paperback)
This edition picks up were Step-By-Step left off. If you have finished the Project Step-By-Step edition or you feel comfortable using the basic features of Project 2002 then it is time to go through this book. After completing this book you will then be able to proficiently use Project in a real project oriented environment. You will even learn some Visual Basic for programming Project macros, but that topic is only touched upon because it is beyond the context of this book.

A thorough book on the 2002 version of MS Project. Generally you don't read a technical book like this cover to cover, but it does have a natural flow to the subject areas. It is well written and you can easily find information, both in the book and the CD. Another good addition to the Inside Out series. (and they all look so good together on the shelf :-)

If you want one book for MS Project, this should be it. However, the entire book can be compiled in less than 500 pages. Otherwise, the book is great You will get to learn all the tips and tricks of MS Project. As somebody on this webpage asked, you can use this book for MOS as well.

Not for mastering this software,

This review is from: Microsoft Project Version 2002 Inside Out (Inside Out (Microsoft)) (Paperback)
I have been an IT Project Manager for many years and purchased this book to support the Enterprise configuration and deployment of MS Project 2002, NOT to learn how to manage a project (fail amount of space dedicated, e.g. WBS) and how to use MS Project in its old stand alone format, a la Project98 (like setting up a seperate project as a resource pool). This book is very poor at decribing the capabilities and how to use them of the Enterprise Project Server. Its like the book was written before the software was complete. I have had to and been successful atfinding Enterprise information on the web for free, not from this overpriced $45 book.
