Microsoft's SQL Server 2000 promises performance, scalability, and speed. Microsoft SQL Server 2000: A Guide to Enhancements and New Features shows database administrators and developers how to deliver on these promises. This book illustrates all the significant enhancements and additions in SQL Server 2000 and shows how they can be used most effectively. Readers learn by example how to use security features, replication, backup procedures, and data warehousing and optimization techniques.
Beginning with an overview of SQL Server 2000, this book discusses online transaction processing (OLTP) and online analytical processing (OLAP), features a tour of different SQL Server releases, and offers a guide to installation. The author describes and demonstrates the changes since SQL Server 7.0, thoroughly exploring SQL Server 2000's capacity as a Web-enabled database server. Readers are then immersed in advanced database administration topics such as performance optimization and debugging techniques.
Microsoft SQL Server 2000 also serves as a resource for those new to SQL Server, providing a basic introduction and details about how to make a conversion work, as well as a feature-by-feature comparison to Oracle 9i. Database administrators will find a collection of clearly explained scripts and utilities to simplify day-to-day tasks. This book concludes with a discussion of how SQL Server fits into the .NET environment and what to expect of the next release.
Sample code is used extensively to illustrate feature sets and illuminate topics covered. The accompanying CD includes this sample code as well as scripts and utilities. Rahul Sharma also shares his tips for optimizing applications' performance with adjustments to code, settings, and hardware. He alerts readers to common errors and fixes, and provides a checklist to guide readers through the installation and verification of the database server's stability. Rahul has translated his experience into knowledge and ready-to-use tools that database administrators and developers need to realize the many benefits of moving to SQL Server 2000.
Rahul Sharma is a senior database administrator for Manhattan Associates, Inc., and a columnist for both Swynk.com and SQLServerCentral.com. He has been working with Microsoft SQL Server since the release of SQL Server 6.5 and is currently working with both SQL Server 2000 and Oracle 9i. He is a Microsoft Certified Professional with more than six years of experience in database administration.

Very Good Book--Concise and to the point,
By Jack Nicklaus (Chicago) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Microsoft SQL Server 2000: A Guide to Enhancements and New Features (Paperback)
An excellent resource. Our company has been working with SQL 6.5 and SQL 7.0 for the last couple of years and we have been thinking about migrating to SQL 2000. I was looking for a book that covers just the new stuff and enhancements rather than the basics which I am already familiar with. Also, I found the Chapters on Advanced DBA topics and the maintenance scripts especially the procedure for calculating the size of the database to be very useful. We have also been toying with the idea of supporting Oracle. Won't happen anytime soon but whenever that does happen, the chapters on the comparison of features will definitely help. Overall a great resource. Very good and comprehensive coverage. I will strongly recommend it.

Copied content?,

This review is from: Microsoft SQL Server 2000: A Guide to Enhancements and New Features (Paperback)
According to the following sources, nearly all the content is copied from other people's work, and is presented as the author's own.http://dbarant.blogspot.com/2005/08/dont-tolerate-fraud.html http://www.windowsitpro.com/Article/ArticleID/47547/47547.html?Ad=1 http://sqlservercentral.com/cs/blogs/steve_jones/archive/2005/08/30/143.aspx It seems that there's been no permission sought for reproduction, and there's no credit given to the original authors. As the links above show, the original authors are quite unhappy. (Hey, I would be!) Mr. Sharma has not responded anywhere or refuted these claims. I DO NOT RECOMMEND this book. Don't get ripped off!

A very nicely written book which covers most of the new (now old:-)) features on SQL 2000. This helped me in moving from MySQL to SQL 2000 and I plan to move my database instances to SQL 2005 now.
