About the Author

Mark Spenik is the vice president of Enterprise Technologies at Venturi Technology Partners located in Richmond, VA. Mark, a graduate of George Mason University in Fairfax, VA., entered the computer industry in 1985. He has designed and coded large-scale applications and has consulted with numerous firms in application development, implementation, and migration. He has a broad programming background, including assembly language, C, C++, HTML, Active Server Pages, and Visual Basic. Mark is a Microsoft Certified Solution Developer (MCSD) and charter member, and is frequently invited to speak at various developer conferences and seminars. Mark has also coauthored or contributed to several books on Microsoft SQL Server or Visual Basic. Mark can be reached via the Internet [e-mail].

Orryn Sledge is a Practice Director with FullTilt in Pittsburgh, PA. He specializes in managing and developing large-scale eBusiness solutions. His background includes SQL Server, Microsoft's .NET platform, Plumtree, Oracle, and other popular eBusiness products. He has been actively involved with SQL Server consulting since 1992 and is a Microsoft Certified Solution Developer (MCSD). Last week I had to migrate from Oracle 8 to SQL Server 2000 and this book came in very handy. The chapters are well composed; especially about networking is easy to read and understand. The examples throughout the book are excellent and the case studies are good too. It could have more questions based on real life settings for prcatice. Anyway this is a great reference book.

I bought this book upcoming becoming a SQL Server DBA. I had three years programming experience which included T-SQL, however, NO DBA experience! It provided excellent explanations of DBA tasks, especially the all important database backups and restorations. I did not require any other book resources. I highly recommend it for those entering the DBA field.

Side note: I only used this book for industry experience and have not used it towards an attempt at MCDBA certification. I have since read the MCSE SQL Server 2000 Administration Guide for Dummies and found the SQL Server 2000 DBA Survival Guide to provide more detail on certain subjects.

This is a huge book with lots of information. I liked the presentation and the author knows what he is talking about on a very large subject.

My only complaint is that I wish the author had written more from a tips and tricks style, or added a section like that.
