About the Author

Brian Larson, MCITP:BI, MCDBA, served as a member of the Reporting Services development team and contributed to the original code base. He is Vice President of Technology for Superior Consulting Services (SCS), a Microsoft Managed Partner. Brian has been invited to speak on SSRS at several national conferences, including the PASS Summit, and is a former columnist for SQL Server Magazine.

More About the Author

Brian Larson is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, with degrees in physics and computer science. Brian has worked in the computer industry since 1985 and has been a consultant creating custom database applications since 1989. He is currently Chief Technology Officer and Partner at Superior Consulting Services in Minneapolis, Minnesota (http://www.teamscs.com). Brian is an MCSE: Business Intelligence 2012 and a Microsoft Certified Database Administrator (MCDBA).

Brian served as a member of the original Reporting Services development team as a consultant to Microsoft. In that role, he contributed to the initial code base of Reporting Services.

Brian has presented at national conferences and events, including the SQL Server Magazine Connections Conference, the PASS Community Summit, and the Microsoft Business Intelligence Conference, and has provided training and mentoring on Reporting Services and business intelligence across the country. He has been a contributor and columnist for SQL Server Magazine.

Brian began his writing career collecting rejection letters for some very bad science fiction short stories. Brian got the last laugh on all of those cruel editors by sneaking a bit of science fiction into his Reporting Services books. The sample company used in all of the examples is an intergalactic shipping company staffed by robots and employing faster than the speed of light travel to offer previous day delivery. The company back story may be fanciful; the business examples, however, are all down to earth!

Brian lives with his wife Pam in suburban St. Paul, Minnesota. Pam will tell you that their first date took place at the Luther College computer center. If that doesn't qualify someone to write computer books, then I don't know what does.

Brian can be contacted at blarson@teamscs.com.

The layout is dreadful, with huge blocks of repetitive instruction flowing over the pages with very little formatting being used to draw attention to important points.

It is very comprehensive, and the chapters and subsections are well thought out and make for a very smooth progression through the material.

Over the years I have been on quite a few projects and there have been very few if any that did not require some type of reporting. For a while that meant Crystal Reports, but when SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) hit the scene, Crystal Reports began to fade on Microsoft projects. That was especially true if I had my way. I was the first person to champion SSRS in state projects in Pennsylvania. That was quite a battle but well worth it!

SSRS is one of the best solutions to come out of Microsoft. I don't say that lightly. I have plenty of complaints about different Microsoft products, but none about SSRS. The extensibility model built into the architecture makes the product completely customizable through extension.

This book introduces the SSRS architecture, the report manager, the basics of databases and database queries, but every topic introduced supports the report builder role. This book is all about the report builder. The chapters are listed below.

Part I: Getting Started
Chapter 1. Let's Start at the Very Beginning
Chapter 2. Putting the Pieces in Place: Installing Reporting Services

Part II: Report Authoring
Chapter 3. DB 101: Database Basics
Chapter 4. A Visit to Emerald City: The Report Wizard
Chapter 5. Removing the Training Wheels: Building Basic Reports
Chapter 6. Graphic Expression: Using Charts, Images, and Gauges
Chapter 7. Geography Lesson: Using Maps and Spatial Data Types
Chapter 8. Kicking It Up a Notch: Intermediate Reporting
Chapter 9. Beyond Wow: Advanced Reporting

Part III: Reporting Serving
Chapter 10. How Did We Ever Manage Without You--The Report Manager
Chapter 11. Delivering the Goods: Report Delivery
Chapter 12.

This is a fantastic resource on Reporting Services. It is very comprehensive, and the chapters and subsections are well thought out and make for a very smooth progression through the material. It provides a great selection of real world examples and best practices concerning a huge variety of the components of Reporting Services. A must buy for someone looking to learn or someone wanting very strong reference material close by.

I am not sure why there are negative reviews. I deal with many technical manuals, and would love for them to follow this type of layout. This book does not fill your head with a bunch of pointless details. The layout is to teach you the concept and then give you an excercise. It is a total hands on approach. This book will get you up and running within a couple of weeks. I built an interactive/drilldown Excecutive Dashboard using this book.

I bought this as a gift for my techie husband for leisure reading and he couldn't be happier. I don't know a thing about Reporting services but it appears to have made him happy.

I returned this for a full refund, so I could have given it any number of stars. I probably would have liked it very much. Unfortunately, the downloaded backup file from the files downloaded from the publisher would not restore. I found a comment from two years ago that someone else had the same problem and there was no response. From the other comments I see, I would guess either people don't use the sample database to follow along or it worked fine for them when they tried it.
