An introductory book.,
By Christopher H. Coddington "Chris Coddington" (Los Angeles, CA United States) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Microsoft SharePoint: Building Office 2007 Solutions in C# 2005 (Expert's Voice in Sharepoint) (Paperback)
I'm not sure where the C# is in this book. As an experienced web developer, I bought it specifically to learn how to design, implement, and ultimately use the Content Management features of SharePoint .This book offered very little in that regard. All the examples required the use of SharePoint designer when most (if not all) C# developers are going to want to use Visual Studio. In the end, there was very little C# and lots of overview. Very disappointed.

Great intro and mid-level work on SharePoint,
By James Holmes "Co-Author 'Windows Developer Po... (South Central Ohio) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Microsoft SharePoint: Building Office 2007 Solutions in C# 2005 (Expert's Voice in Sharepoint) (Paperback)
This book's a critical resource if you're doing development on the SharePoint 2007 platform. The book hits a solid overview of the many features of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) and also gives you good dives into many of those same features. The book also deals with Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) and lays out differences between WSS and MOSS.
Hillier does a great job of covering the gory details of MOSS and hits the pros and cons of each feature. One example would be the hideous XML you have to hand-generate for working with the Business Data Catalog. He also does a great job discussing one of my recent pain points: workflow. Hillier lays out the strengths of the feature (workflow's power of process automation), then talks about the warts of the feature (design difficulties, numerous issues surrounding SharePoint Designer, etc.). Hillier is also honest about where MOSS features fall short, such as the note laying Hillier's preference for the K2 workflow engine over that of native Windows Workflow Foundation on MOSS. The book is structured in a concise, highly usable fashion. Hillier discusses topics, then uses clearly written examples to walk you through the topic. All the examples are implemented in an environment that Hillier focuses an entire chapter on setting up. That chapter (#2) is one of the book's gems since it shows you how to get an entire development infrastructure set up and configured using Virtual Server to host three separate machines. If you've already had exposure to MOSS then the book may not have a lot of extras for you. The dives into each feature aren't necessarily extremely deep dives, but they are good enough to get you well-versed with the concepts. Hillier's book is an absolute must-have if you're looking to move in to any sort of work on the MOSS platform.

Microsoft should ship this book with MOSS,
This review is from: Microsoft SharePoint: Building Office 2007 Solutions in C# 2005 (Expert's Voice in Sharepoint) (Paperback)
I have been trying to get ramped up on SharePoint 2007 ever since before the Beta 2 Tech Refresh a few months ago. To say that the landscape of good information on SharePoint 2007 is slim would be an understatement. The SDK that Microsoft ships is barely usable.
Scott Hillier's book really took things to the next level in my opinion. If you are going to be customizing the out of the box SharePoint setup, then I can't recommend this book highly enough. It was easy to read and well edited, I was able to make it through most of the book on a 6 hour trip I just went on. Excellent book... if you can afford only one, I'd go for this one.

Excellent training book for sharepoint,

Wow! I like the way Scot Hillier wrote this book. For experienced .net developers new to sharepoint, this book must be on your book shelf.
Scot Hillier walks you through fundamental aspects of Sharepoint, and shares his insightful thoughts along the path. At first, I do not understand why he solves problems using a variety of Microsoft technologies such as Visual Studio, InfoPath, Sharepoint Designer. To me, isn't that Visual Studio enough? Later, I realize that his way is the best since he picks the right tool for the right moment. However, I do not see an enterprise sample in his book. I do expect that. Second, web part security is a tough topic. I expect more explanation. In the exercise, a medium trust level is used. According to the context of that chapter, a minimal trust level should be used.

Great Work as Usual,
This review is from: Microsoft SharePoint: Building Office 2007 Solutions in C# 2005 (Expert's Voice in Sharepoint) (Paperback)
I remember when I was learning MTS I bought Scot's book, MTS Programming With Visual Basic, and was truly amazed at what an easy read it was on such a technical subject. The reason is very clear. Scot knows what he is wrting about not only from a technical perspective, but also from a business perspective. His insights are priceless.
I thoroughly enjoyed his MOSS 2007 book and recommend it highly. Personally, I am very thankful that people like Scot take the time to write valuable books like this one. He makes up for other authors, who write huge books, that are painful to read and contribute nothing. One such author, and apparently his editors, does not even know that he is the "principal" not "principle" author of his book.

Very Good Reference and Overview,

Scot's book is quite good and serves as a very good reference for WSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007. There are several exercises in the text that should help you get up and running with Sharepoint 2007. The book covers quite alot of topics and has some sample code. This book however does not stand out from other books as it does not have any nuggets such as tips and tricks. If you have watched most of the screencast from Microsoft and Ted Pattison then I would not recommend you buy this book. I bought the book because the Editorial review said it included a new chapter on building a SharePoint solution from start to finish. Was expecting a case study type approach and then a SharePoint Solution to tackle it. Good book if you are just starting to look at SharePoint 2007 but you will find yourself looking for more if you have had any exposure to the material.

I recently upgraded from Scot's Office 2003 version of this book, and I'm glad I did. Although most of the examples parallel the earlier book there's enough new material to make the trip worthwhile.
Let's be frank: SharePoint development is not for the faint-hearted. Building SharePoint apps requires a good working knowlege of Visual Studio, the [...] So far, every example in this book has worked **exactly** as described. I've been using this book as my main tutorial for building web parts and features for SharePoint 2007. It's been a real lifesaver and has helped me avoid a lot of teeth-gnashing and hair-pulling. Scot's long experience building all kinds of SharePoint applications and dealing with SharePoint administration issues really shows in his explanations and topic coverage. Scot's a very efficient and succinct writer, and he doesn't overstate the obvious or annoy you with irrelevancies. Too many writers constantly remind you how smart and skilled they are -- I don't see any of that in Scot's writing. The only thing Scot left out is what to do when something prevents your application from installing or working correctly. I'm sure Scot opted not to cover these contingencies because they come from all manner of things: IIS updates, folder permissions, IE security settings, etc. Covering every possible issue couldn't be done in a 10,000 page book. Scot's web site [[...] is a great resource for SharePoint developers. Also, I like the APress books, a lot. The page margins are wide enough to add written notes, and the paper quality is very good so that highlighter doesn't soak though to the backside of the page. Regarding the comment from another reviewer about a lack of C# code: You must be looking at a different book! There is tons of C# in this book! There's also a lot of XML and some HTML, but I've found more than enough C# examples to make my day. Five stars because this books works for me.

Must Have Guide,
This review is from: Microsoft SharePoint: Building Office 2007 Solutions in C# 2005 (Expert's Voice in Sharepoint) (Paperback)
This is a must have guide for those initially entering the SharePoint world to do administration and development. It systematically walks through SharePoint installation and deployment and the basics of object management on the server. It has been a close companion in all my work.

This is a very good book from C# developers point of view. It covers most of the features that you want to customize in SharePoint. I like the presentation of ideas first and then exercises. It gives you a starting point on how to do it and it's up to you to go to a more complex level but at least it already gives you an idea what to look for.
I highly recommend it and it is easy to carry as it has only around 500 pages. After this I will read the SharePoint Administrators Companion book by Bill English from Mindsharp.

Scot knocks a home run over the fence with this book. This book somehow manages to touch on virtually all the hot topics in Office SharePoint Server 2007 in a mere 500 pages. It is an easy read with fantastic samples. This book should be on every developer's desk if anything for the 30-some pages in chapter two that walks you though setting up MOSS 2007 development environment using MSFT's Virtual Server. I'm recommending this book to all my customers.
