For those who have used Microsoft Streets and Trips before, 2013 doesn't have any real changes. The buttons at the top of the screen for locating nearby points or routing are kind of ugly now but you don't buy navigation software based on how pretty the buttons are. I wanted updated roads, campgrounds and gas stations so I upgraded from 2011 to 2013 and I got exactly what I expected. All the little annoying features such as it added all new stops to the end of the trip instead of by the nearest other stop are still there and you still have to move the new stop up one click at a time. But if you're used to Streets and Trips, there's no learning curve on the 2013 version.

For those of you who haven't used Microsoft Streets and Trips before, I think this is the best of the navigation software. It isn't great and it has some irritating quirks that take a bit to get used to. There are features that would be nice to have, like being able to look up truck stops instead of just gas stations or program in the size of your vehicle so that it would avoid low bridges or tight city streets. But I haven't found anything that works better or has those features. And it is accurate. That to me is the most important part of the software. I've been in some remote locations with my Garmin and it says that the place doesn't exist but if I follow the Streets and Trips directions, I've always gotten where I wanted to go without issues. I plan trips with Streets and Trips, plug the end result into my Garmin, and have Streets and Trips on my laptop as back up if needed. It's worked well for me and I've used it for trips across the country.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not compatible with Window 8.0 February 8, 2014

I have been a MST user for years on the PC. No problems. Bought the 2013 version to download onto new Microsoft Pro Surface 2 tablet and it is not compatible to Windows Version 8. Wasted money since it can not be refunded.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Travel Planner! December 9, 2013

This is my second version of Streets and Trips. First, the software download was quick and easy. We have GPS and smart phones, but we like multiple stop driving vacations and S&Ts is a wonderful, feature packed, planning tool. (1,500+ miles &10 days in Alaska; 3,000+ miles & 14 days in Yellowstone/Tetons area, etc.)

S&Ts is easy to use and we have found its travel times very accurate even when traveling thousands of miles over several weeks. We use the route planner and include optional "stop x-min every x-hrs" for avg.gas/restroom stops, insert stop/start locations to explore then start/stop driving day times so can better determine where want to overnight. Based on our selected MPG, tank-empty % and driving habits, it provides a refill location on the map, We have find this very helpful when traveling in sparsely populated areas or late at night. The maps are great, construction updates are free, and there are export features.

3.0 out of 5 stars An in-depth review on good and the bad October 27, 2014
By Jake B.
3 stars is fair because some things are fair and some things are poor with Streets and Trips. I am a field sales person, and I have 400 customers who are points on the map that I have to figure out who to visit everyday. I am a heavy map user - I've been using Streets and Trips for more than a decade, and I use MapPoint (Microsofts other map tool) for territory design (splitting up the territories between reps in the first place), and the Badger Map for building my daily schedule and organizing my territory.

First, the Good about Streets and Trips.

1. You can use it offline. This is the most important part for me, because there are parts of my territory that are our of service. When I'm in service, I use the Badger Map to plan my day and route on my ipad, but when AT&T doesn't feel like building towers, I whip out my trusty laptop and get on Streets and Trips.
2. Streets and Trips beats all the handhelds hands down. It allows me to get granular manipulate my routes and choose routes in a way that you can't with the handhelds. I need this for my job.
3. The new version allows me to change and manipulate icons and filter them off the map beautifully. Huge upgrade over past versions.
4. The display of the map and the scheme/legend clear and clean. A great job and helps organize. It would be great if I could change the order in the legend to prioritize and make it make more sense.
5. The point of interest icons are great, and help me find things like hotels when I don't have an internet connection
6. Maybe the best part about S&T is that the Multiple Destination routing (Offline). I sometimes have 10 points in a day if I'm out prospecting. Being able to sort and organize my stops in the best order and get directions from one stop to next is awesome.

If you don't care for longer reviews, I've summed everything up in this first paragraph:

I work with many high-end software programs, such as Steinberg Cubase and Adobe Photoshop, and I can say without a doubt that MS Street & Trips is the most needlessly counter-intuitive software program I've ever used. It's not hard to use -- rather it just doesn't function the way anyone would want or expect a GPS software program to function. If you use it every day, you can get used to the backwards interface, but for someone like me who uses the software every now and then, it's so frustrating it would drive a person mad.

The details:

I want to point out right away that I don't use GPS for planning long trips with rest stops, calculating mileage, points of interest, etc. My only purpose for MS Streets & Trips is to simply know where I am at all times, and to occasionally plan routes to gigs and back since I am a weekend warrior musician. Once you tell the software to start tracking, it does a great job of it. (I use a GlobalSat BU-353 receiver.) You always know where you are. The additional map configurations (political, terrain, and especially nighttime) are very handy, the speedometer is dead-on accurate, and installation onto my ASUS tablet running Win 7 Pro was a breeze.

But that's pretty much where the accolades end.

The automatic route planner has major issues. It can choose some pretty weird paths. If the software chooses a funky route and you want to change it, you can't fix it just by moving or dragging it. (Why, that would make too much sense!) Instead, you have to set up "stops" so that the software follows along the path of the stops.
