It works great for me so far, and it is very well made.

You can dock with or without the type cover, if you dock with the type cover you can keep the keyboard flat or inclined using the magnet at the base of the tablet 3.

The viewing angle is actually quite good when looking at it on a desk.

Pros-

1. Great amount of ports.
2. Allows you to charge the computer.
3. Very good portability.
4. Extend display to other monitors.

Cons-

1. A bit expensive.

I purchased my Microsoft Surface Pro 3 a couple of months ago. The computer cost me an arm and a leg but the experience has been phenomenal. I can't really complain, it was worth every penny. I have been using it as my main computer and tablet around the house and office. Up to this point however, it never felt like a complete desktop replacement. Since the beginning, the fact that there was only one USB port bothered me. It felt restrictive. That all changed last week when I saw that the docking station was released. Having used the computer the computer for a couple of days now I figured I can make a pretty good initial assessment of the dock.

The dock itself is not very big, in fact, it is not much bigger in length than the computer itself. Horizontally, once you have the computer connected and set inside the dock, it only extends about an inch to each side of the computer. It is the same distance as the bezels in landscape mode. Vertically, the dock covers about half of the computer. The only port that it does cover is the charging port. It uses the charging port to charge the computer while on the dock as well as transmit the data between the USB ports on the dock and the computer. It does not block the use of USB 3.0, the volume keys, or the air vent. You have to close the kickstand to set it up on the dock. You cannot adjust the position of the computer when it is on the dock. Is that the end of the world? Not really. The viewing angle is actually quite good when looking at it on a desk.

As far as weight is concerned the official weight is 1.43 pounds.

Surface Pro3, with its really light weight, 12" FHD+ screen, very easy to write pen, multi-angle stand and a magnetic type cover was a winner anyways, now with the design of the docking station the Microsoft hardware design team has earned even more of my respect.

Pros:
1. Leaves the ports on the tablets uncovered (so you have a second mini display port and another USB3.0 on top of the many ports in the docking station)
2. You can dock with or without the type cover, if you dock with the type cover you can keep the keyboard flat or inclined using the magnet at the base of the tablet
3. Docking station extends elegantly to the sides allowing you to place the Surface Pro 3 very easily, and with a slight push snaps right back to connect with the computer.
4. The docking station allows you to attach the pen magnetically to one side, which is better than the type cover attachment to keep the pen that comes standard with the Surface Pro 3.
5. The viewing angle of the Surface in the docking station though fixed is pretty decent.
6. The docking station looks quite sophisticated.

Cons:
1. $200 is a bit high for a docking station which one can't use with any other computer other than the Surface Pro 3. But even though the docking station may be obsolete by the time I'm ready to upgrade to the next Surface, given it's convenience I found it to be a much better buy then getting the $80 second power charger, so I can keep the original charger in my laptop bag or at home and the docking station at work.

If only Microsoft Windows 8.x software designers were so thoughtful as the Surface Pro 3 hardware designers and hadn't mucked up the desktop experience ...

I purchased the Surface Pro 3 shortly after it came out and loved the device, which kept me begging that the Pro 3 Docking Station would get released. Once it did, I immediately purchased it. The Surface Pro 3 is an excellent device and the docking station really makes it a complete package.

The docking station is very well made, sturdy, and follows the design and characteristics of the Surface itself. First, the design. The angles compliment the Surface Pro 3. Everything about the docking station gives it a professional look and feel. It looks great sitting on the desk (and by the way, is one of the few docking stations I have actually put on my desk). I tend to put docking stations and laptops out of the way and out of sight. But being able to use the Surface Pro 3's touchscreen and writing capabilities made me want to keep it in sight. The only part you want to hide are the cables, but some straps or other methods can easily take care of that for you.

The "catch and release" of the docking station is great. Slide the Surface Pro 3 down on the dock. There is a lip on the bottom of the dock that catches the device. Then slide the sides of the dock in and you are set. No need to plug in additional cables. With the dock closed against the Surface Pro 3, it is firmly in place. The type cover can then be lowered and used. You cannot detach/attach the type cover once you have it in the dock.

I have my dock connected to Ethernet, power (obviously), USB devices, and two monitors (daisy chained using the mini displayport connector on the back of the dock). I have mine connected to two Dell U2414H monitors. You can also choose to use the mini displayport connector on the Surface Pro 3 itself.
