Product Description

Touch Cover 2

The cover you can type on just got better with illuminated keys you can use anytime.

Work and play, day and night.

Thinner and lighter, the Touch Cover 2 has illuminated keys, so you can work and play in even more places, both day and night. Just click in and type up to two times faster than onscreen. Or, fold it back to return to full-touch mode.

Features

  • Innovative, lightweight and just 2.5 mm thin, this revolutionary design just got even better.
  • Smart enough to know when you’re deliberately pressing a key instead of just resting your hands, backlit, pressure-sensing keys also help you work in more places thanks to built-in illumination.
  • Fold the cover back like a magazine and keystrokes are automatically disabled to prevent accidental data input. Flip the cover back into keyboard position to return to typing mode.
  • The smooth, spill-resistant, easy-to-clean material repels moisture and dirt.
  • Navigate Windows easily with Windows shortcut keys. The built-in trackpad gives you the touch screen experience, without having to take your hands off the keyboard.
  • A magnetic connection without any buttons or locks to get in the way lets you instantly click in the Touch Cover — or simply pull it away to remove.

After going back and forth between the Touch Cover 2 and the Type Cover 2, I chose the former for the following reasons:
1. It's thinner. At just 2.5 mm, it barely adds thickness to the Surface 2's profile. The Type Cover 2 is twice as thick at 5 mm.
2. It's lighter by 65 grams. When you hold the Surface for an extended period of time, you do feel its heft so every gram shed matters.
3. It's better for flipping. When I'm browsing the web or reading magazines, I flip the cover back. You can also flip the Type Cover but the moving keys can be annoying.
4. Its backlight do not bleed. Unlike the Type Cover, the Touch Cover do not have any opening so only the letters are illuminated.
5. It's dirt-resistant and easy to clean. While both the Type Cover and Touch Cover are mostly made of the same material, the keys in the Type Cover attracts smudges. The Touch Cover is made entirely of that felt material which is resistant to oil and dust.

Unlike its previous iteration, Touch Cover 2 is very sensitive, capturing even feather-light presses. This means you can be very accurate with this keyboard, given that your fingers are also accurate. The lack of physical keys means you don't get the feedback you get from standard keyboard, but with practice, the depression on the home keys is enough for accurate touch-typing.

I tried the touch cover 1 when I first got my surface pro and I couldn't stand the poor sensitivity and feel of the keyboard. After my previous keyboard broke I received a touch cover 2 for Christmas and was pleasantly surprised by what I experienced.

Sensitivity:
VAST improvement. No longer am I having to hammer down on the keys, hoping that it recorded. The sensitivity has been adjusted so well I can actually rest my hands on the keyboard without pressing everything else.

Comfort:
The fabric it is made over is much better as well. Instead of feeling plastic-like, it feels such as a felt-ish type material. Not only is it nice for my hands but it protects my screen perfectly.

Performance:
While an amazing improvement over its predecessor, users must keep in mind that it does have a learning curve for extensive typing. It is very useful for standard web-searching, facebook, and email. However, it still suffers from the problem of being a little too slow for typing a paper/report. When I say slow, I mean that as my fingers fly across the keyboard it has trouble recording all of my letters if I type too quickly.

Overall, I must say that Microsoft has made a significant improvement over its previous model. As long as you are not planning on writing long papers or reports, it is perfect for almost any user.

It is extremely thin and light and when its folded up on the surface I don't even notice it. Backlighting is great. I'm typing this review on it and don't seem to be making that many mistakes but I'm an average typed. I can see where if you typed really fast and often it could get annoying but for average note taking and essay writing for a student its great. Also I OT the touch cover instead of the type cover because I thought the type cover would scratch up the screen when filed up but this on doesn't. It has its flawed (smaller trackpad, and small in size in general) but for the average user its great. I have larger then normal hands so it is a little cramped but I could still make it through long typing sessions with no discomfort. Great product just buy a discounted one or a used one from amazon cuz I don't think its worth 119$. I got mine for 80$ in like new condition on amazon.

I bought this from MicrosoftStore.com with a 10% student discount.
I was going back and forth a lot between this and the touch cover 2 and the touch won at first. Even though the touch cover 2 is much improved over the original touch cover, it just can't compare to type 2. I loved the idea of the touch keyboard, its thinner and lighter. I used the Touch Cover 2 for about 2 months trying to get the hang of it, but I ended up selling it. It was great for browsing the web but when I had to write paper for my class, the Type Cover 2 is the way to go. No matter how good you are with touch keybaord, you will make more mistakes with it than the type 2.

First off, with only a little price difference between this and the Type Cover 2, Microsoft wants you to pick depending on more than price. And I actually did choose this considering more than price since I already have a Type Cover 2 to start with. The Type Cover 2 is an excellent keyboard/cover. It's as close as it'll get to a laptop keyboard or fancy tablet keyboard. It works great and requires no adapting. The Type Cover (2) on the other hand is often overlooked just because the concept is really hard to accept. How do you type on a surface (<--see what I did there) with no actual buttons? I thought the same but since I wanted to maximize portability with my RT and then Pro, I decided to give it a shot. And since third party/used prices for these are so low (and much lower than the Type versions), why not give it a shot? Worst case is you end up with a durable and high quality screen cover.

When you first try using the Touch keyboard and think too much on it, it'll actually be quite difficult to use and you find yourself with asgoua so gdmuch gllsd stypos. What works for me is just to tap/type like you would normally do and just let your familiarity with computer keyboards kick in. When I freely type with muscle memory (with the assumption that I'll hit the keys I want), I rarely get typos. You just have to let it go let it GOOOO (sorry) and the keyboard becomes like a normal keyboard and it is ridiculously good. It does however, work best on a flat surface as I tend to drift my hands to the wrong alignment on other surfaces. But overall, it's so good/good enough for me that I'm getting rid of my Type Cover 2. I notice the bulk and weight of the Type Cover more so than the typing issues of the Touch Cover. Your miles may vary, but it works for me.
