Decent study material,
By A Customer
This review is from: Microsoft TCP/IP Training : Hands-On, Self-Paced Training for Internetworking Microsoft TCP/IP on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 (Academic Learning) (Hardcover)
This book was at the most decent study material for the exam. It gives you a lot of the surface understanding of the subject but doesn't give you the indepth information to really understand TCP/IPing. I ended up using this book as a 2nd hand resource to Mark Minasi's book "Mastering TCP/IP". Minasi's book covered in detail just about every area of this subject. I wouldn't tell anyone not to buy this book, but I would tell you to get a book that goes more indepth and use this book as a 2nd study reference.

Overpriced, Overrated and Unnecessarily Confusing !,

This review is from: Microsoft TCP/IP Training : Hands-On, Self-Paced Training for Internetworking Microsoft TCP/IP on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 (Academic Learning) (Hardcover)
I also scored a 948 on my TCP/IP exam, but only because I used Exam Cram with this book to fill in the numerous omissions, errors and poor explanations. Unless you have a good foundation with TCP/IP, this book is not for you. It is quite confusing to read through. The coverage of DNS and subnetting were incomplete and poorly explained. The section on Troubleshooting was all of 3 pages long, yet covered 30% of the exam. The accompanying CD had two useless 10 minute presentations on the TCP/IP Protocol Suite and Sliding Windows which are not even touched on in the exam. Finally, the review exercises are not explained at all, so have fun figuring them out. Overall, the TCP/IP exam was pretty simple and all you will really need to pass is Exam Cram which describes the topics infinitely more clearly.

Watered down TCP/IP info,

This review is from: Microsoft TCP/IP Training : Hands-On, Self-Paced Training for Internetworking Microsoft TCP/IP on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 (Academic Learning) (Hardcover)
I found this book good for giving a basic understanding of TCP/IP, but I can't see how anyone could pass the TCP/IP exam using this book... too watered down. This isn't the book to actually LEARN TCP/IP, but it gives a general overview.

Strong practices / weak explanations.,

This review is from: Microsoft TCP/IP Training : Hands-On, Self-Paced Training for Internetworking Microsoft TCP/IP on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 (Academic Learning) (Hardcover)
This book would be good for a course with an instructor to explain the why's behind everything. Although there are some good descriptions of terms, and objects, I found it weak in wrapping things together. There was little information on troubleshooting as other reviewers have stated. I am going to try reading the "MCSE Exam Notes" for TCP/IP by SYBEX. I have had good experiences with these books.

Crucial tips missing from this guide,

Putting heavy faith in Microsoft for developing the proper study material for their MCSE exams - I was a little more then letdown with Internetworking with TCP/IP on Windows NT 4.0.One of the most crucial aspects of TCP/IP is how to create a subnetting table - one not included in this book or many others. Only found by searching on the Internet and very critical for success if you cannot grasp subnets in detail. Book is great when setting up a small network with the first time and using TCP/IP with WINS, DHCP and such. LMHOSTS and HOSTS are covered in good detail. Nice looking on your bookshelf - but missing some important tips and tricks for the real world of TCP/IP and Microsoft's test exam questions.

Did NOT meet my expectations!,

This review is from: Microsoft TCP/IP Training : Hands-On, Self-Paced Training for Internetworking Microsoft TCP/IP on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 (Academic Learning) (Hardcover)
This book is good except for one very important aspect of TCP/IP: subnet masking. The author(s) gave very little explanation on determining a mask for a range of IPs. They mention in one paragraph about using more than one octect to determine a mask, but fail to give any detailed explanation. I used other books to get a thorough understanding. I'm not a novice. I've been working in IT for eight plus years. Try an O'Reilly book instead!

The material covered in this text is indepth and challenging. Still, I was able to pass the TCP/IP adaptive exam on my first effort. It's a tough exam but all the important material is covered and all the material is important. You can't ignore any areas so don't take the exam prematurely. When you think you've got it, go back and study until you thoroughly understand the material. Especially if you aren't very experienced. I gave it four stars because I'd like to see Microsoft handle the end of chapter questions/answers differently to help me resolve my incorrect responses. Hey Microsoft, Coriolis does a nice job on the questions.

I passed the exam with flying colors (score 966) on the first try with this kit as my only resource. That says it all. Yes, some of the topics could be covered in more depth. Don't just read the book and expect to be an expert. You have to get hands-on experience with the product (which is enclosed with the kit). Use the book as a starting point, then explore menu options and test different configurations. Experiment with the command line utilities. This process worked great for me. Also enclosed with the kit are copies of the TCP/IP RFCs. Explore them too. Lots of valuable information is found within. This training kit does have prerequisites listed on the box. Be aware of them.

you won't pass the exam if using this book only,
This review is from: Microsoft TCP/IP Training : Hands-On, Self-Paced Training for Internetworking Microsoft TCP/IP on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 (Academic Learning) (Hardcover)
I have read over the book & i fail the exam. you can't find the most important point for answering for exam questions. If you just want to learn TCP/IP, this book gives you a good concept (for only Windows NT, not for UNIX and other OS). But if you really want to pass the exam, don't rely on this book only but also buy one more book to help yourself. This book really can only gives you the TCP/IP concept on WinNT, NOT FOR ANSWERING THOSE MAJOR QUESTONS IN EXAM TO PASS. By using this book, you will able to answer those mirror questions only .

The only book you need (as well as practical experience),

I would say the book is sufficient for passing the exam. However, practice is also necessary and I read the book through twice as this was necessary to make all the pieces fit together. In my exam I was hardly asked about IP addresses, classes or subnets... amazing (and I knew them really well). I would recommend people to get further information on RAS as the book does not cover this subject sufficiently.
