The Microsoft Universal Mobile Keyboard is a bluetooth keyboard that should work with any device (laptop, tablet, smartphone, etc) that has bluetooth connectivity. This keyboard is not part of a tablet cover/case. Instead it folds up into its own case about 10" x 5" x .5". A lot of these keyboards feel like the keys are scrunched together, not so with this one. The keyboard has a good solid feel. The unit is very sturdy and well made. Battery life is very good and charges by connecting the keyboard to a USB port or charger.

When you unfold the keyboard, it turns on automatically. Closing the lid, turns it off. The lid section contains a ridge that is used as a stand for you tablet or phone. Simple, but it works well. The first time you go to use it with a new device the keyboard tries to auto pair with the device. Pairing is a one time connection setup you perform with bluetooth devices. This is a nice feature and worked great with my iPad and iPhone. If you have a device that doesn't auto pair, you still have the ability to do it manually. This is fairly simple. Your device is put into pair mode and displays a number. You type this number on the keyboard and they're paired. The keyboard can pair to multiple devices.

The keyboard also a slide switch for the type of device you're using it with (Apple, Windows, and Android devices). This customizes the keyboard and adds features specific to each operating system. Also there are function keys, a pairing button (for manual pairing), and an LED for charging status.

In my view this keyboard shines for sitting in an unconscious place (desk, kitchen counter, drawer, etc or for traveling and setting up in a hotel room) as a device stand with keyboard. Its not as convenient as the ones built in to the cases but it's studier. Also, I don't like the weight of a keyboard case combination when carry a tablet around. All in all, I'm very happy with this.

I have hated, I mean HATED every keyboard at whatever price I ever paid until now. I have never like any keyboard dedicated to a single platform much less ALL platforms. My Old Samsung Cell is a smart phone but one of the older dumber "smart" phones in it's first generation. But it paired to this as quick as I turned on Bluetooth. The most surprising of all for me is on my iPad 4. I love the on screen keyboard SO much I always thought you had to be crazy to ever even want an external keyboard. Well 30 seconds into life with THIS keyboard on my iPad and I was sold. I hated the keyboard from Microsoft that I bought with my Surface tablet that I actually returned both the tablet and optional keyboard.

I ordered this as a novelty, I think more to prove myself right and reassure myself that this was another dumb and unnecessary gimmick. I was as wrong as a man can possibly be. This is maybe most impressive in the absolute stealth of its this profile. It's like the worlds thinnest wallet that can turn your phone or ANY OS tablet into an actually relaxing & enjoyable experience when you use it to communicate using keystrokes instead of your voice on a call. I honestly LOVE this. Probably the biggest surprise in the last couple years and from such a simple item. Getting 5 stars out of me isn't all that easy. Wife says I'm gettin old & grumpy. Well, for the last time, this is a WONDERFUL and stealthy keyboard that types beautifully and stows in the smallest spaces imaginable.

A footnote I would like to add is the way I use this. I am recovering very slowly for 4 major surgeries in just the past 5 months. As a result I have been flat in bed for a large part of this time and just now allowed to even get up and sit in a special built recliner.

Great little keyboard, portable, action is on the money, and does all the things you'd expect from a, well, a keyboard!

There's a notch inside the cover that doubles up as a propup stand for a phone or tablet. You'll probably want to skip it if you've got any of the newer style phones that have ultra thin edges. I've got a Nexus 6 and a Moto X version 2. I can use both in landscape mode but as soon as I put them in portrait they fall too far back to be useful. It's not the fault of the keyboard, it's that the edge of the phone is simply too thin. If you do get this keyboard make sure you also pick up a stand for your svelte phone.

Very beautiful keyboard. it feels solid to type on and very compact and perfect for travel. you can switch seamlessly between platforms, I am actually typing this review with it on my iphone5 :). I also used it with a Nexus7, very convienient on the road and in the future with any device. Microsoft did a good job with this keyboard. the only thing is that your fingers might feel a little crunched becuase there is not a whole lot of space but you can separate it so that there is a distance between the keyboard and your screen.

Why i bought it?

I travel a lot, and since there are a lot of apps in the iOS platform, using the macbook became unnecessary during short period trips.

What's good:

1) internal battery chargeable by miniUSB, it lasts a lot and so far i didn't have to charge it more than 3 times (i've had it since... i don't know, 2 months?)

2) The "switch" to other hardware is convenient, you can change the typing from one device to the other, however it lags a little until the iOS device recognizes and enables the keyboard... takes like 5 seconds, but it's not a dealbreaker

3) the "logos" on the "switch" are suggestions. You're not obligated to keep the android switch to an android device, the windows to the windows, and the iOS to... X devices at once! The android logo is one hardware (and it can be android, iOS or windows, your choice!), the windows logo is another hardware (same rule), and the iOS logo is another hardware. So happens that you can sync only 3 devices at a time... If you "remove" one from the keyboard, it will be fixed in another. But it can sync only 3 devices at a time, one in each "switch" position.

4) I bought this device while using iOS 8.0, so there is a lot of complaints regarding the "send" feature in iMessage, that doesn't support external keyboards. Other issue that is not clarified by Apple and takes some time to adjust is the keyboard "US-International" for punctuation: This is easy configured in the iOS configuration menu, under keyboards.

The "Inconvenient"

1) The cover is magnetic, and it serves as a dual position for a tablet like the regular iPad, however the iPad Air 2 doesn't have this versatility, even with the smart cover.
