Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

If you've never programmed before but are aching to get started, all you'll need is Microsoft's Visual Basic and a book like Michael Halvorson's Step by Step Microsoft Visual Basic 5, a detailed and painless introduction to Microsoft's easy-to-learn yet remarkably sophisticated VB programming environment. Halvorson doesn't presume his readers have any prior programming knowledge, so he walks through the programming process in extensive detail and introduces concepts at a reasonable pace. The first few chapters show how to use Visual Basic to write and run simple programs; they're followed up with coverage of fundamental programming concepts such as variables, loops, and IF-THEN statements. By the end of the book, you'll be writing programs that can display multiple dialog boxes, manipulate arrays of data, and access text files or databases. Lesson summaries at the end of each chapter provide a quick reference that you can use to help recall what you've learned. While Step by Step Microsoft Visual Basic 5 won't offer much of interest to readers who have done even rudimentary programming, it's an excellent starting point for the truly uninitiated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Done, December 28, 1999

This review is from: Microsoft Visual Basic 5 Step by Step (Step By Step (Microsoft)) (Paperback)
I had never done anything even remotely related to programming before I read this book, and yet I was able to use it as a springboard to Visual C++ and J++. By the fourth chapter I was able to create marketable applications using purely original code. Covers everything and if you don't want Everything it gives you that option too. I recommend this book to anyone who has No experience but is interested (even a little, it grabs those who aren't sometimes) in learning. Have fun, I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last I've found a beginner's book written for beginners!, September 16, 1998
This review is from: Microsoft Visual Basic 5 Step by Step (Step By Step (Microsoft)) (Paperback)
I've already purchased and gotten totally frustrated with Cue's Visual Basic 5 Night School, as well as Wrox Press's Beginning Visual Basic 5 by Peter Wright. Due in part to the poor editing of the former, and the annoying British-isms of the latter, I began to wonder if the material was simply beyond my grasp. Little did I realize that books are generally one of the least efficient ways for adults to learn technical material and that very few technical authors have the gift to communicate their subject in a supportive manner. If you don't have the time or the money to immerse yourself in a fast-paced interactive environment, such as an Approved Technical Education Center course, then thank your lucky stars for Michael Halvorson, who seems to be the only guy in the bunch that understands not only his subject, but who has the rare gift to communicate it.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Book That Gets Used, April 3, 1999
This review is from: Microsoft Visual Basic 5 Step by Step (Step By Step (Microsoft)) (Paperback)
In a nutshell, the book lives up to it's name. Far from the content, the binding is coming apart for every page read. The author goes into structure and the basics for a good foundation to raise above and move to the next stage.I found no errors in the practice files, this says alot about how it was developed. Even though he doesn't talk about advanced programming techniques, this should come at no surprise since the book is designed for the newcomer in Visual Basic. Worth every penny. I will probably read another one of Michael books on the subject in the future.
