Well Done,
By Hobarthicus (1824 S. Girton Denver Co.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Microsoft Visual Basic 5 Step by Step (Step By Step (Microsoft)) (Paperback)
I had never done anything even remotely related to programming before I read this book, and yet I was able to use it as a springboard to Visual C++ and J++. By the fourth chapter I was able to create marketable applications using purely original code. Covers everything and if you don't want Everything it gives you that option too. I recommend this book to anyone who has No experience but is interested (even a little, it grabs those who aren't sometimes) in learning. Have fun, I did.

At last I've found a beginner's book written for beginners!,
This review is from: Microsoft Visual Basic 5 Step by Step (Step By Step (Microsoft)) (Paperback)
I've already purchased and gotten totally frustrated with Cue's Visual Basic 5 Night School, as well as Wrox Press's Beginning Visual Basic 5 by Peter Wright. Due in part to the poor editing of the former, and the annoying British-isms of the latter, I began to wonder if the material was simply beyond my grasp. Little did I realize that books are generally one of the least efficient ways for adults to learn technical material and that very few technical authors have the gift to communicate their subject in a supportive manner. If you don't have the time or the money to immerse yourself in a fast-paced interactive environment, such as an Approved Technical Education Center course, then thank your lucky stars for Michael Halvorson, who seems to be the only guy in the bunch that understands not only his subject, but who has the rare gift to communicate it.

The Book That Gets Used,
By Neil W.Fisk (nfisk@compusmart.ab.ca) (Alberta Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Microsoft Visual Basic 5 Step by Step (Step By Step (Microsoft)) (Paperback)
In a nutshell, the book lives up to it's name. Far from the content, the binding is coming apart for every page read. The author goes into structure and the basics for a good foundation to raise above and move to the next stage.I found no errors in the practice files, this says alot about how it was developed. Even though he doesn't talk about advanced programming techniques, this should come at no surprise since the book is designed for the newcomer in Visual Basic. Worth every penny. I will probably read another one of Michael books on the subject in the future.

Excellent Beginning for those who know absolutely nothing!!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Microsoft Visual Basic 5 Step by Step (Step By Step (Microsoft)) (Paperback)
This is an excellent book for beginners. I encourage those who complete this book to also go with the Visual Basics mastering series and workshop. Learning Visual Basics allows you to understand how the programs that you run on your computer actually work. This book gives you a full understanding of that. It is hand on. No way to go wrong with this book. I wish Microsoft had books like this for the entire visual studio. You will have fun learning visual basics 5 with this book. Take your time and enjoy the experience so you retain everything this book has to offer.

Learn VB,

If you want to learn VB then this is the book. I know VB 5 is getting old but there are little differences between the VB5 and VB6 (Neither is really "WEB FOCUSED"). So pick up this book and learn the language and product and get ready for VB7 which will be web ready. This is a good start into the world of VB. Easy reading and fun.

An excellent choice for the 1st time VB Programmer,
By mike.king@wachovia.com (Winston-Salem, North Carolina) - See all my reviews

I started learning VB about 4 months ago by following the examples set forth within this book. It is easy to read, however, after reading this book, you are left thirsting for more information. I think more actual commands should have been included with an explanation. I am now writing Active X components as well as an on-line inventory program. I owe alot to this book.

This is an excellent book for a beginning programming language as well as a guide to Visual Basics. It is an excellent reference book and teaches you step by step the hows and whys of Programming with Visual Basic 5.0. Thumbs up Microsoft. Now create books like this for C++, J++, InterDev, and FoxPro.

If you want to start learning about Visual Basic, this book is for you. No programming experience required but it helps to have programming backgound. Eventually you will need a more advanced book.

The book is well-written, but does not cover much ground,
By A Customer
This review is from: Microsoft Visual Basic 5 Step by Step (Step By Step (Microsoft)) (Paperback)
First, my objective is to get certified in VB 6.0, and it seems that while this is a well-written book, it does not really cover that much ground. Why is it that MicroSoft can't come out with a book like the Waite Group's? I have also tried McKelvy's book, and I would not recommend it, first because he doesn't give you guidance through the code as well as Halverson, and second, the CDROM practice test did not work right. I'll stick with the Waite Group's book, thank you.
