5.0 out of 5 stars Your paying for Visual C++ compiler/IDE ... not a book.
This is just an alternative way of buying the compiler and IDE for Visual C++. (Same for C# ... I've got the deluxe learning edition of it as well). I've skimmed the book, and found it lacking. Might be a decent starting point for a beginner. I simply use the MSDN archive that comes on the disk for help.

So if you're looking for a way to buy Visual C++ compiler and IDE...

1.0 out of 5 stars waste of cash, dont buy POS book, POS software!
In order to use this software, you must have w2k, NT4 or XP pro.
XP home, 98, 95, ME will not work.

The book is garbage. It truly is.
If you are a beginner, this book will leave you confused, potentialy frustrated.

If you are experienced, this book will teach you things that don't rely matter.

This review is from: Microsoft Visual C++ .NET Deluxe Learning Edition (Pro-Developer) (Paperback)

So if you're looking for a way to buy Visual C++ compiler and IDE (i.e. Visual Studio), then this will probably save you a few dollars over buying just the software, and you get a book that you might give to someone, or just add to your bookshelf. But don't pay this amount for the book. The book is a freebie...

(I used to work at a company that paid for my MSDN subscription. But now I don't, and my last MSDN disks were becoming obsolete. If you're in the same boat, this is cheapest way I've found to get latest Visual Studio and C++ compiler.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great buy if you don't have VS.NET yet, April 17, 2002

If you don't own VS.NET this is a good setup to get you started in VC++.NET. You get the VC++ IDE and the Examples CD and the Step-By-Step book. If you already own VS.NET, don't buy this... buy the step-by-step book by itself. It comes with the examples CD. If you are stupid enough to not read the description on the box or online, and realize this, then it's your own fault.

This book is more of a sales panphlet for .NET then an actual Learning edition. They want you to shell out the 1400$ so you can use the Professional version. Thats the point here. MS isn't trying to help you learn C++, there trying to sell you more software.

If you are advanced, this book will be a pain to read.

The software is buggy. I've had it crash 4 time on me. It feels like it's still a beta. I think MS rushed the software out.
If you can find a copy of VC++6, use that.

The book dosn't teach C++, it teaches VC++.NET
The intension of the book is to introduce .NET for VC++. This is somewhat pointless because if your a student you want to learn C++ on the MS C++ compiler, not __gc garbage colection in a managed application. This is just C++ imitating Java. Pointless. Destroys the cretive spirit of the beginer.
There is not tech support with this software. So if your up a creek, tought luck...

I would like to tell you to avoid this set. But the truth is if you want to make games or application or just learn C++ on windows, there arn't many options. MS is a monnopoly, remember?

I dont like the book. I think it's terrible. It's no way to learn C++, VC++, or .NET
I dont like the software. And if one reads above, there is a mention that .dll canot be compiled and link. I havn't tried yet, but I wouldn't be supprised.
This is not a VC++.NET learning edition. This is a waste of cash, time and a joke.

Actual quote from the book. (Remember, this is a boxed set, it's the book and the VC++.NET STANDARD edition)
Page viii
"Important
Before you break the seal on the seal on the CD be sure that the book matches your version of the software. This book is designed for use with MS VS.NET PROFESSIONAL EDITION (...)"

The book if for the professional edition, but comes bundelled with the Standard edition software.
What a bunch of idiots they have at MS marketing.
