NOT FOR BEGINNERS,
By A Customer
This review is from: Microsoft Visual FoxPro: Programmer's Guide (Paperback)
As we all know, Microsoft does not write books for beginners; therefore, if you were looking to learn a computer language or how to create databases using tools like Visual FoxPro, a Microsoft 'manual' would not be the book for you. The title should be "Microsoft Visual FoxPro 6.0 Intermediate to Advanced Programmer's Guide"

An important Foxpro Manual,
By A Customer
This review is from: Microsoft Visual FoxPro: Programmer's Guide (Paperback)
This is not a book for beginners. It is intermediate to advance level detailing how to perform specific programming tasks, often with examples. In this regard, it is indespensible. I frequently use it to solve specific programming problems, such as "How do I use ActiveX with Foxpro?" It will give you the specific technique to use. However, if you are new to Foxpro, start with something else.

bloated, disoganized, boring,
By A Customer

I have to agree that this is quite possibly the worst guide of its kind ever created. Or at least, the worst I have ever experienced. Like trying to learn a language by reading the dictionary.

Not so hot,

This review is from: Microsoft Visual FoxPro: Programmer's Guide (Paperback)
I am currently using this book at my new job. I was previously exposed to FoxPro 2.6 and then Visual FoxPro, but I never learned to program in it. It is very confusing to the average person who may little to no knowledge of basic programming principles. I see why the "Dummies" series is so popular.....definitely not for beginners!

Appears to add little to MSDN Library!!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Microsoft Visual FoxPro: Programmer's Guide (Paperback)
I briefly compared the table of contents and selected chapters of this book with the material provided by the Microsoft Developpers Network (MSDN) Library, which can be downloaded from microsoft's website for free, and it seemed to me that this book is simply a printed edition of the same material. (My inspection was brief, so I could be wrong -- maybe there is some new material in there somewhere; but it certainly didn't seem that way.) Bear in mind that this is not a trivial thing: personally, I prefer to read from a book rather than from a screen to avoid eye and neck strain, and the MS Press books are nicely printed. But if you're on a budget, download from MSDN and print it out!

Easy to read, deep, concise explanation of VFP 6,
By A Customer
This review is from: Microsoft Visual FoxPro: Programmer's Guide (Paperback)
I like Microsoft's "Programmers Guides". This one is no exception. As a VB programmer, I found this Fox Pro book extremely well written. It was concise and you could feel the depth of what it was explaining. No beating around the bush... and lots of meat included. Also, the price is right. It's not a book filled with code samples... although it does have code samples. It is more of a "here's how and why this happens"... or "here's concisely how to do do this." This is obviously a book to be read and re-read several times.

Great book Lots of concepts still applies to Visual FoxPro 8,

I have this book. It's on my desktop on the time. Lots of concepts still applies to Visual FoxPro 8. Every VFP programmer should have it. I doubt Microsoft Press will release a Programmer's Guide for Visual FoxPro 8. Use this book to look up techniques, etc. Not to read cover to cover. You use it once, it pays off.

Probably the worse code books ever written. It lacks sample codes and detailed explaination of how and why.
