Master the skills to create applications in the new, dynamic Visual C++.NET development platform! Rather than using pre-written code, you build applications from the bottom up to facilitate a deeper understanding of the concepts used in programming with Visual C++.NET. Create and modify simple Windows applications, and learn the tools to create more complex applications. The book initially presents hands-on instruction in the basics of C++ and Windows application programming, then brings the reader confidently into the Visual environment in the second half of the book. You'll be comfortable using the most innovative, state-of-the-art programming tools in no time!

2.0 out of 5 stars For C++, possibly good - for .NET knowledge, thumbs down, July 10, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Microsoft Visual C++ .NET (Paperback)
I have the first edition of this book. If you are looking for a book that presents the new features of .NET in VC++ this isn't the book for you. This book covers the aspects of C++ only (touching on some MFC (blech). There are better books out there for learning C++, and there are better .NET books out there than this. Pass on this one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Useless, December 16, 2003

My CIS class uses it. The book is basically a rip-off. Half the times the instructions in the book don't work and you have to figure out things yourself. I returned the book two days after I bought it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Accurate, but somewhat useful, July 10, 2006

The information is innacurate and/or so brushed over as to be frustrating. The book is filled with walk-along examples, which are good for beginning programmers, but lacks good editing, especially of code examples that you follow along with.

I think the target audience is beginning programmers who want to read one book and be able to write crummy windows applications in a point & click style.

A good starting point, but you will NOT master C++ using this book.
