Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

This user-friendly manual is an ideal resource for newcomers to Windows 98--and even for those who are still not very familiar with Windows 95. The guide begins with an overview of the major new features within Windows 98, which include mostly enhancements to Internet integration. A review of the Windows 95 interface--which hasn't changed much in Windows 98--is thrown in to acquaint novices with the visual aspects of the operating system.

In the second part of the book, the author walks you through the installation of the program and shows you how to use the control panel to customize Windows 98 for your needs. A chapter dedicated to system management and optimization follows, highlighting topics such as how to protect your computer from unauthorized use, how to maintain a central network of PCs, and how to access files remotely. The book covers other elementary subjects, such as how to locate and manage files and disks, how to print from Windows 98 (with sections as introductory as "What Is a Printer?"), and how to use fonts. Another section shows you how to use all of the Windows 98 accessories, from WordPad to Minesweeper.

The last third of the manual offers more detail on Windows 98's Internet capabilities, showing you how to install a modem and set up an Internet connection (on MSN and using Internet Explorer, of course) with the new built-in wizards. Other chapters show you how to use Outlook Express, multimedia, and audio and video on the Internet. The guide closes with a walk-through of how to install and set up a Windows 98 network.

The book sprinkles warnings, notes, and timesaving tips throughout the text to reduce stress for new and semi-phobic users. Screen shots and illustrations of icons show you exactly what your screen should look like. All in all, this is a strong reference for the rest of us, whether we're switching from Windows 95 or are new to Windows altogether. --Cristina Vaamonde

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Migration to 98 book for everyone., June 22, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Microsoft Windows 98 Companion (Paperback)
Microsoft's Windows 98 Companion is one of the best if not the best book for migration to 98 to 95. It is written in clear and consise English that is easy to understand. The book begins with a 'Whats New section, then goes into the installation of Windows 98. The Installation chapter walks the user through the installation process, It tells the user what to do to insure a great installation without losing anything. The rest of the book explains in detail the features of this new operating system. How to use them without the stress which seems to accompany any upgrade. If users will use this book when working with Windows 98 I guarantee as does Microsoft, that you will "Make friends with Windows 98".
