Heavy on networking,
By
This review is from: Windows 98 Resource Kit (Paperback)
The book is extremely extensive on networking, and would appeal to a systems manager at a company who wanted a "basic-to-medium" level depth in knowledge of just about all of Windows 98. You will not be a computer tech with this book, but you'll sure know a lot of neat things about windows 98. In my opinion, they should have divided the book into one for networking, and one for those who just need it for troubleshooting pc's. And then in each book, provide a "medium and advanced" depth in knowledge on each subject. Here, one who just troubleshoots pc's will pay alot for a little information, some of which may be valuable, but otherwise, it may lack the depth required in some necessary information. Why didn't Uncle Billy do this? Why, to keep his phone techs employed!

A Must-Have Spinner for the Windows Professional!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Windows 98 Resource Kit (Paperback)
Microsoft Windows 98 Resource Kit has indeed proven its worth:- a much-needed troubleshooting manual with explicit and immaculate examples on how to solve certain so-called 'everyday' problems which you may encounter in your usage of Microsoft's latest OS release, Microsoft Windows 98. Is indeed a 'worth-it' bargain and a 'must-have' for those of you out there who are worked out by banging and cursing your system whenever it crashes!

The Undisputed Champion of Windows 98 Reference Books,
By A Customer
This review is from: Windows 98 Resource Kit (Paperback)
The bottom line is that every other book written on Windows 98, including the other Microsoft titles, is merely a footnote to the Windows 98 Resource Kit. It's an automatic read for computer professionals and the one you buy first, whether you are a pro or want to be one. It is a good bet that many of the other Windows 98 books out there were written with the Beta version of this Resource Kit close at hand. It is the primary source of information on Windows 98, direct from Redmond. Where else would you look for the correct information on a Redmond product? Sheesh!

O/S, Well Done,
By Larry G. Mathis (Azusa, California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Windows 98 Resource Kit (Paperback)
I've been in the IT profession for some 32 years. I've read, written, adnd edited many technical reference manuals which we now call Resource Kits, but I've never until now seen a guide so well put together. Now I can find the 'REAL" answer(s) without going from chapter to chapter or book to book. Adding a positive plus, it's fun, it's easy and it everything any IT professional needs to build, install, maintain, troubleshoot ANY PROBLEM along with provide you with the ture understanding on how an Operating System and related component work independently as well as together.Thank you most kindly for taking the time to read this. I only wish there was a Volume II, but what could you put in it? L. G. Mathis

The ultimate "readme.txt" file!,
By lupetin@ibm.net (Tarrytown, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Windows 98 Resource Kit (Paperback)
Someone using Windows 98 without the Windows 98 Resource Kit on hand is at a disadvantage. No other book provides the latest "behind-the-scenes" information about the operating environment we've all come to love....and hate at the same time! Who else but Microsoft (the perpetrator of all of Windows' nastiest bugs) can walk us through the intricacies of Windows 98 and help us make sense of this latest version of the planet's most pervasive piece of software.

A must have for the computer professional.,
By cadams@tauck.com (Connecticut, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Windows 98 Resource Kit (Paperback)
As a computer professional who works with several hundred pc's running Windows 98, this is an essential tool for me. It has helped me solve countless problems with our computers since we migrated to Win 98. In my opinion, this book, and a subscription to Microsoft's Technet are the resources that people in our field simply MUST have.

Extremely informative resource with complete explanations.,

This review is from: Windows 98 Resource Kit (Paperback)
This huge book contains almost anything you could ever want to know about Windows 98, plus information on compatiblity with other operating systems. It includes explanations of new technologies implemented in 98 and elaborates on the new features. However, if you're looking for a detailed technical reference, you'll have to look elsewhere... but this book is not lacking in much else.

Buy this book,
By A Customer
This review is from: Microsoft Windows 98 Resource Kit (Paperback)
If you are purchasing this book for the software, don'tbother. The release is stable, but stale at this point (the cabs werecreated in December 1997). If you are looking for a comprehensive reference for the next version of Windows, this is it. From deployment to tweaking to trouble shooting, this weighty tome is a "must have" for any serious administrator. However, this is not the final release of the code and Windows has undergone many minor changes since this publication (it comes with build 15xx and build 1723.3 is out now with dozens of interim releases). As far as those "reviews" that simply bash Microsoft -- this isn't the forum; review the book.

A definitive text for Windows 98,
By A Customer
This review is from: Windows 98 Resource Kit (Paperback)
The manual that comes with Windows 98 is disappointing to say the least, which makes a book such as the Resource Kit essential. There are enough changes in how the software works that this book is needed. There are some errors, some of which are documented in Microsoft's Knowledge Base article Q188307. All Windows power users must have this book!
