Book Description

June 30, 2001 DV-MPS Programming
With "Programming Active Directory Services", developers get the hardcore, hands-on guidance they need to fully exploit the network directory services in the Microsoft "RM" Windows "RM" 2000 operating. The book delivers a concise, conceptual introduction to the technology, then plunges into the how-to's for building powerful distributed applications that use the Active Directory service and the Active Directory Services Interface (ADSI). Developers working with the Microsoft Visual C++ "RM" and Visual Basic "RM" development systems get practical instruction on how to 'directory enable' their Windows 2000-based applications -- including how to take advantage of Active Directory support in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server and other Microsoft technologies. Network administrators will find useful coverage and examples geared to their needs, learning how to use ADSI to automate common administrative tasks. In addition, the book highlights the key differences between Novell Directory Services and Active Directory -- helping readers facilitate application migration. Each chapter examines a different facet of programming with Active Directory, illustrated by a real-world application. Many of these sample programs are ready-to-use utilities -- and all the book's code is packed onto the companion CD-ROM so readers can study and reuse them in their own projects.

More About the Author

Charles Oppermann is a frequent speaker on computers and technologies. He's presented hundreds of times to audiences large and small on a wide range of topics. As a child in the late 1970's he started building computers. By the nineties, he was Chief Software Developer at Henter-Joyce in St. Petersburg (now Freedom Scientific) where he developed the JAWS screen reader for the blind. In 1994 Melinda French, newly married to Bill Gates, hired him at Microsoft and he moved to Redmond, Washington. As he finished working on the now-infamous Microsoft Bob product, Oppermann was asked to build a team to ensure Windows 95 would be usable by people with disabilities.

He added a number of features to Windows 95 and developed technologies that enabled people with sensory and mobility impairments to use their PC's and access the internet. For this work, he was awarded two patents.

Oppermann also work on Internet Explorer versions 3 through 5, Windows 98, Windows NT and Windows 2000. He retired from full-time work at Microsoft at the close of 1999. He is the author of two books on Active Directory, an enterprise-level networking technology.

After a number of short-term projects at Microsoft, Cisco and other companies, he returned to Microsoft fulltime in 2006 as Program Manager for the Speech programming interfaces. There, he worked on a new text-to-speech engine for Windows Vista and ensured the new Windows Speech Recognition application worked well in 8 different languages. He did a similar job for Windows 7.

With his position eliminated during cutbacks in 2009, he returned with his family to the Clearwater, Florida area. He currently spends his days volunteering at the Tampa Bay Computer Society, including giving presentations, repairing member's computers and teaching a intensive Windows 7 class.

Oppermann is an avid collector of antique computers - particularly from the 70's and 80's. He also enjoys digital photography, historical mysteries, and his other major passion; flying as a pilot for over 20 years with more than 1,000 hours in the air.

My job is centered around Active Directory including architecture, manipulation and troubleshooting. I am currently writing code to perform schema modifications and bulk updates to existing objects and I have found this book to be an extremely good reference. While I am using several books including the Microsoft VB 6 reference manuals and Active Directory Developer's Reference Library (along with the excellent O'Reilly "Windows 2000 Active Directory" tome) I have found Charles Oppermann's effort to be at least as good as the others and in terms of examples and explanations perhaps a bit better. I highly recommend this book as a good reference for those writing VB to manipulate Active Directory (I don't write C code but the samples are also plentiful.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Only one problem with this book, It need a security Chain., January 7, 2005

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 2000 Active Directory(TM) Programming (DV-MPS Programming) (Paperback)
I have found only one problem with this book. It needs a security chain built in to lock it to my desk. It has an annoying tendency to get barrowed when I am not ask my desk.

I would suggest that Amazon bundles it with "how to train your Doberman to guard your computer books"

I would recommend that any who likes this book, check out Charles Oppermanns other book that is the sequel of this integrated with dot.net. It is here at Amazon under the title "Programming Directory Services with Microsoft .Net and Xml".

The only problem is that Microsoft canceled it.

Maybe if enough of us ask for them to release it....

I have taken a lot of information in this book and integrated it with dot.net on my own. But it's my belief that we need the Sequel.

Joe.

5.0 out of 5 stars "The" AD Programming book, January 22, 2002
This review is from: Microsoft Windows 2000 Active Directory(TM) Programming (DV-MPS Programming) (Paperback)
Learning to Program to the Active Directory is made easier by choosing the book that is right for you, you could start on the 'Net by immersing yourself in msdn.microsoft.com and the AD SDK material but if you are like many people you need to 'have the right info at your fingertips' and this MS Press book by Charles Oppermann contains the right dose of material to assist you in your AD-enabled project! Other books such as Kirkpatrick or Robinson dive into different aspects of AD programming in more depth (especially if you are C++ inclined) while Oppermann chooses to cater towards both beginning and experienced AD programmers. Many programmers will discover some new pointers and 'best practices' that they will find to be of use!.

If I could cherry pick among the various AD/ADSI books available I would augment Oppermanns excellent book with Chapter 18 of the O'Reilly book by Alistair G.Lowe-Norris on Permissions and Auditing.

In short even if you are now moving to System.DirectoryServices under .NET you will want a copy of Charles Oppermanns' Active Directory Programming for your AD programmers toolkit!
