Probably the only win2k server reference you need,
By
This review is from: Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Administrator's Companion (IT-Administrator's Companion) (Paperback)
This book should be kept in the server room by every win2k server administrator. (Then carry the "windows 2000 pocket consultant" with you when you move around.) Everything you want to know about the workings of Windows 2000 Server is in here. The coverage on Active Directory is the best I've seen so far. The sections on Internet setup is also excellent and easy to follow. Although I think the index can be improved, information is quite easy to find.If you work with win2k server, this is definitely worth getting. If only Microsoft includes this with the software package...

One of the most complete references about Windows 2000,

This book is one of the most complete Windows 2000 books you could find. I read this book from cover to cover and is a great book to have as a complete Windows 2000 Server reference. Not full on every aspects (if you are looking for clustering configuration, this is not the book to purchase). It covers DHCP, WINS, DNS, Active Directory, Internet Information Services...and the rest of the Windows 2000 features very well. A very thick book, but worth the time.

As an MCSE (NT4) I'm gearing up to deploy and recertify on WIN2K. This book gives a very thorough description of the O/S including migration and implementation strategies. It also is a very good reference book, which is very important. This is my 3rd WIN2K book and it is by far the best. Loaded with information, I strongly encourage you to check out this book.

Excellent one volume reference,

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Administrator's Companion (IT-Administrator's Companion) (Paperback)
I found this book to be a superb single volume reference. Easy to read, thorough, and well written. Especially strong chapters on the critical preparatory work that needs to be done before upgrading your network to Windows 2000. Clearly written by authors with real world knowledge of corporate networks, with excellent advise on avoiding and surviving disasters. And the CD has an actually useful online version of the book. A copy of this book is on every one of my system administrator's desktops, and it's always the first place they look for help.

Useful & Authoritative Reference From MS, Nice CD,
By
This review is from: Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Administrator's Companion (IT-Administrator's Companion) (Paperback)
I planned and installed Windows 2000 Server and Active Directory Services using the pair of books on these subjects by Curt Simmons. This 1464 page doorstopper from Micorsoft Press with a 60 page index is my technical reference when I need to see the obscure options or fine details. All of the text (with enlarged graphics) is included on the CD, which is searchable. I installed it and use it to supplement the regular online help files. It's about as much fun as the unabridged Webster's but no less essential. If it were fun, I could give it five stars.

Better than the resource kit,

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Administrator's Companion (IT-Administrator's Companion) (Paperback)
One of my first purchases when I implemented our Windows 2000 Server was the Resource Kit. I struggled with it for months before getting the Administrator's Companion. I immediately found Admnistrator's companion well written, concise, and very helpful in almost all aspects of managing the server.I would consider this a must-have resource for administering W2K server!

Unbelievable!,
This review is from: Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Administrator's Companion (IT-Administrator's Companion) (Paperback)
This is the book to get to learn about all of the new features for Windows 2000 Server. The writer is very well spoken and explains concepts in an easy to understand manner. It is one mother of a thick book.... but for a subject like this you need it. With this book I got my Windows 2000 network up and running as well as implementing many of the advanced options that the product offers. This should prove to be a very usefull book for those of us looking to upgrade our MCSE's coming up later this year.

Finally, a Win2K book that thoroughly covers a number of very technically challenging subjects without it being a challenge itself to read -- This is not only an excellent study guide for anyone re-certifying for Win2K, being an easy to read, comprehensive flow of concept, without bullying you into technical submission, but also makes an *excellent* reference once it's gotten you solidly up and running. It should be a *MANDATORY* addition to any Win2K administrator's library. Hey, Microsoft... wanna learn how to write a Training Kit? Read this book!

Not as good as it should have been,
By
This review is from: Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Administrator's Companion (IT-Administrator's Companion) (Paperback)
Having read all the comments, you would have thought this is the only book youd need - you'd be wrong. Very small sections on very important TCP/IP topics spoil an otherwise excellent book (a very good internet section). There is very little on DHCP and DNS - the latter being incredibly important in the scheme of things. DNS has taken over from WINS in the naming scheme, and there is very little info on this. I understand this is an Admin guide, but people should be aware what they are buying - good for general admin, but no bible.
