Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review
One of the best Windows 2000 references yet published, Microsoft Windows 2000 Administrator's Pocket Consultant is a professional-level how-to guide for all versions of Windows 2000. Designed with the mobile expert in mind, the cover of the book has a tough, plastic-coated surface (like that of a playing card) and rounded corners (though it won't quite lie flat without weights). Its contents are similarly hard-boiled. Concepts are explained in expertly written and carefully organized prose, while succinct procedures tell you how to meet requirements and numerous tables list options and their effects. There aren't many screen shots, but that's okay because this is a reference for people who don't need them.

Coverage is wide-ranging and includes everything a power user or system administrator would want to know about the configuration, expansion, and efficient administration of Windows 2000 systems and networks. If you're not sure how to best go about an incremental backup or the installation of a Domain Name Service (DNS) server under Windows 2000, you'll find what you need here. If you know a bit about Windows NT (or even Unix) in a networking context, you can extract all you need to know about Windows 2000's unique operational features. Similarly--even though it wasn't designed for the purpose--this book makes a great study aid for the Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) tests on Windows 2000. --David Wall

Topics covered: Administration of Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional and Server editions, including network setup and configuration, users, groups, Active Directory, file systems, disk shares, RAID arrays, data backup and recovery, print shares, TCP/IP, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS), and DNS. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Portable and Good Too!, May 11, 2000
By David Gurgel (Roseland, New Jersey United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
At 8 X 5-1/2 X 1-1/2 this nicely bound volume can take the abuse of being carried around in a briefcase. With 477 pages including a 20-page index you should seldom have to resort to your ten-pound complete technical reference. An on-the-road administrator or consultant might find this to be his most indispensable resource.

This book is one in a series of portable references for system administrators. The book contains the typical step-by-step instructions with frequent screen shots. The typesetting is nicely done, and, like most books from Microsoft Press, the editing has been carefully done.

The author assumes general familarity with a networked Windows, if not NT, environment. It is not a planning or installation book but a daily adminstrator's guide. If your network planning is not complete or if Windows 2000 is not yet installed, you will need other references.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect companion for win2k sysadm, July 10, 2000
This book is indeed one of the best Windows 2000 references (IMHO, the best). While it does not really fit in a regular pocket and does not teach you how to start working with win2k, it comes in extremely handy when you need to know how to get work done as a win2k administrator. So far I have not found a single error in the book.

I think the coverage is very complete, but given the comlexity of win2k, some areas are bound to be left out. Suffice it to say that this book looks like it has everything I need to do my job. If you work as a win2k administrator, definitely get this volume.

5.0 out of 5 stars Microsoft Windows 2000 Administrators Pocket Consultant, March 5, 2001
By Jim Clement "ScorchMonster" (Honolulu, HI United States) - See all my reviews
Clear. Concise. Informative. Encyclopedic in scope. This book is not designed to teach you Win2K. It is designed to serve as a reference checklist for most common, and not so common procedural tasks that occur on a day-to-day basis.

While I own an ever expanding library on Win2K, I find that this is the book that always resides in my ready bag, so as to be available where I travel. Mr. Stanek has done a marvelous job with this book. I highly recommend it.
