5.0 out of 5 stars Windows 7 In Depth
Comprehensive, well written with humor highlights in non-technical terms. I would definitely consider purchasing other books by the authors who demonstrate complete mastery of the subject. I have used XP-Pro for years and have been eased, without pain, into the Windows 7 experience with this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I would call in depth
It seems the aether has miss titled this book. Perhaps Win7 in review would be good. I found that the author covered a lot of ground but wasted a lot of pages on features that were in previous versions. In depth means to me that the inner-workings of the OS would be described. It seems the aether has miss titled this book. Perhaps Win7 in review would be good. I found that the author covered a lot of ground but wasted a lot of pages on features that were in previous versions. In depth means to me that the inner-workings of the OS would be described. He simple lists all the features and describes what they do. The author actually walks you through the installation describing how to hit the next button. Why have a chapter on this? I would understand if the book then went on to describe the more complex deployment features that Win 7 sports but it doesn't. That's the entire chapter on installation.

I would describe this as a good general knowledge book but certainly not an in depth description of the features.

Not much "in depth" about this book. Good book for the newbie....disappointing for those looking for some "in depth" descriptions of the system.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good solid reference tome, October 19, 2010
This review is from: Microsoft Windows 7 In Depth (Paperback)
Full disclosure, i got my copy in a barter-like transaction with one of the authors. Noting that a couple previous reviewers question whether this work can really be called 'In Depth', i say it's a matter of expectations. i'm the kind of user who lacks extensive experience with the predecessors of W7 and therefore benefits from the start-from-the-basics approach taken by the authors. So my experience of this volume is that it's 'just about enough depth'. As another previous reviewer pointed out, it's more likely to be used on a case-by-case basis as an event-specific problem-solving tool, as opposed to being read cover-to-cover as an integrated exposition of the full spectrum of W7. I agree with that reviewer's point that it IS worth taking time to browse the entire volume, at least those parts that strike the reader's fancy in skimming the table of contents. By doing so, i learned a lot of interesting, and sometimes quite useful stuff about W7 that i would never have otherwise found out, in part because i am teaching myself W7 without the benefit of nearby colleagues, mentors, or instructional personnel. This book is a great help to the self-taught W7 student who has limited exposure to previous Windows. The extensive index is useful in finding answers to specific questions.

Good book for a class - but too basic for certification prep and too advanced for "learn windows 7"

1.0 out of 5 stars in depth? maybe for a 7-year-old kid who just started to play with a PC, November 25, 2011
This review is from: Microsoft Windows 7 In Depth (Paperback)
This is a major disappointment.

One of the biggest gripes I had with Win7 is it wireless networking system (very messy and counter intuitive, btw), I started flipping thru the pages hoping to find some in-depth coverage of this topic but found only a few pages of shallow description that pales in comparision even to the online help that comes with win7.

This is very surprising considering that one of the authors has over 10 years experience in computer networking, maybe he just doesn't want to share his in-depth knowledge with the readers?

Coverage of other topics are equally disappointing. In short, my impression is that for anyone what has used a windows machine (winxp, vista etc) for over 2 years, this book is going to be a waste of time any money.

The title should be renamed to "Win7 in depth for pre-schoolers who have never used a windows pc before".

How do youlearn about files, folders, and libraries? You do not. They have this in chapter 5 and once there-you have to go backto chapters 3 and 4 where they touched on these so best to review those before chapter 5. When you go back to chapter three-the authors tell you to get ready for an hour of lookingat their book. So here is the breakdown-in one chapter you want tocuttothe chase and findhow ev erything is setup for files but now instead ofgettingto the heart of the matter-read these other chapoters first which you will need to understand thisother chapter.Iever wrote a book but if I did-maybe I am just adumass but could we read about the stuff you make chapters for instead of other chapters? What is this? The biggest time and resource user when you plunk the money down for this book.

Great book. The only thing missing is a CD for loading to your PC for quick reference.
