Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 Enterprise Technologies Training Kit is a combination text and software package that provides a self-paced training course based on the preparatory curriculum for the 70-068 Microsoft Certified Professional examination. Each chapter covers a major topic and contains a series of separate lessons.

The book first goes through the process of planning for enterprise NT Server deployment, covering the basic domain concepts, network protocols, and file system considerations. Next, the course moves into installation and configuration, including information on client connectivity issues and server roles. The following chapters explain enterprise resources such as users, profiles, security, and shared resources.

A major connectivity chapter covers key networking subjects such as DHCP, DNS, Internet Information Server, and connections to Novell Netware and Remote Access Servers. Later sections instruct how to analyze and optimize both server and network performance. The book finishes with a chapter on troubleshooting that includes discussions of registry entries, boot sequences, and stop screens.

A 120-day trial version of NT Server 4.0, as well as a companion CD-ROM with a searchable HTML text version of the book and multimedia concept simulations completes the package. Every system administrator should have a comprehensive knowledge of this network operating system--this training kit delivers just that. --Stephen Plain --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Upon consideration, worth the extra money, May 23, 1998

This review is from: Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 Enterprise Technologies Training (Training Kit) (Paperback)
At first I was disappointed when I discovered that the multimedia component of the training kit consisted mostly of a series of grainy slides with voice-overs. However, as I progressed through the course I was impressed by the quantity and quality of the subject matter covered. It takes several days to go through all the material properly. There are in fact some interactive sessions that simulate the Windows NT environment and allow you the opportunity to practise specific tasks.

A nice feature is the ability to automatically advance the screens.

I feel I was able to understand the subject more thoroughly by having it presented in two quite different ways.

In short, at the end of the training, I thought the multimedia version of this training course was well worth the extra money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Most of what you will need, April 4, 2000

The labs included through out the book are very useful when trying to understand the lingo of the book itself. I purchased the book and found that the book as a whole is a very good book especially the labs. The written material leaves a little to be desired though. I took and passed the enterprise examine and found a couple questions that were not covered in the text. The book itself is a fast read and an easy read if you are familiar with all the protocals...if not your in for a long read. But regardless of the book be sure to install the nt 4 trial disk that comes with the book. That's what will take you over the top. Good Luck!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not at the same level as usual from MS Press, May 19, 2000
By A Customer
Fair book, however falls short of the usual high standards by Microsoft Press. This book has been written by an outside company on behalf of MS Press. Too many words and repetitive writing and a large amount of errors is the downfall of this book. Check out http://mspress.microsoft.com/support and run a search based on the book title. This will reveal some of the shortcomings of this edition.
