Product Description

Platform: PC Download

Only if you currently have a device running Windows 8 ("Core") operating system can you upgrade to Windows 8 Pro (Professional) using this Windows 8 Pro Pack (upgrade) product. Windows 8 Pro allows you to connect and share your files and also adds enhanced features if you need to connect to company networks, access remote files, encrypt sensitive data, and access to other more advanced tasks.

The new Windows 8 start screen is your personalized home for items you use the most and can be customized according to your user preferences. Windows 8 Live tiles provide real-time updates from your Facebook, Twitter, and e-mail accounts. Along with the new Start screen, the lock screen now includes e-mail, calendar, and clock widgets.

To access your PC, Microsoft has replaced a standard PIN or password with a swipe gesture; unlock your PC by clicking or swiping preset locations you’ve selected on the lock screen. New functions also allow you to search for your favorite software programs, open, close, hide, resize, or run multiple apps simultaneously with the swipe of a finger or a swipe of the mouse.

Windows has also made changes to make your PC more secure by boosting its existing security features and adding "SmartScreen," which acts to prevent suspicious programs or apps from being installed or running on your machine. Finally, Windows 8 also gives you the ability to "refresh" itself to give users a new starting point and a cleaner version of Windows.

How to add Windows 8 Pro Pack to your edition of Windows:

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap "Search"

(If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, and then click "Search")

  2. Enter "add features" in the search box, and then tap or click "Settings"

  3. Tap or click "Add features to Windows 8" and then tap or click "I already have a product key"

  4. Enter your product key and click "Next"

  5. Read the license terms, select the check box to accept the license terms, and then click "Add features"

If you were running Windows 8, your PC will restart automatically and Windows 8 Pro will be on it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Painless upgrade, but a nuisance that it is needed August 30, 2013
Platform for Display:PC Download|Verified Purchase
This is a fairly painless upgrade, at least when done using the code bought directly from Amazon, but at the same time it irritates me that it is even needed. My opinion is that Microsoft should have just sucked it up and put out a single version of Windows 8, even if doing so might have meant they would have a bunch of customers that would have had features they didn't need (which might have cost Microsoft some licensing fees to have included).

Realistically, not all users *need* what Windows 8 Pro adds into the OS (Operating System) compared to the core or base product, and I understand that. Not including those features in every copy of Windows 8 that is ever installed shaves a little from the cost of the product and in turn that supposed savings can be passed through to customers that are buying new hardware and getting Windows 8 pre-installed on it. On the other hand, the MSRP on this item is not all that consumer friendly. Granted, customers are getting something for that money, but what they get is relatively little return for the investment.

In my case I wanted the media center components that aren't included in the core/base product and the only way to get them is to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro. Note that these components were built-in with Windows 7, so losing them in Windows 8, or at least having to pay separately to get them seems to just be an effort to pump up the profit margin for Microsoft.

The more irritating thing, for me, with Windows 8 is that most OEMs only offer Windows 8 core/basic on their hardware. If Windows 8 Pro was an option at time of purchase, it would likely cost less than the upgrade fee charged for this product.

How long until Mr. Ballmer retires at Microsoft? Dare we hope that whomever replaces him is someone that find a way to treat Microsoft's user community like customers rather than like people that will take anything you throw at them and pay for it no matter what?

1.0 out of 5 stars Key code won't work on re-install on same computer November 29, 2012
Platform for Display:PC Download|Verified Purchase
Installed on my Windows 8 machine to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro. Had a few software glitches with other software so thought I'd simply reinstall windows using the factory rescue disk. Now the key code won't work and I have to repurchase the Pro upgrade again. The copy protection scheme is flawed.

1.0 out of 5 stars Windows Pro Pack is a joke May 30, 2013
Platform for Display:PC Download
Let's see what Microsoft is offering for the money. I am supposed to pay Microsoft 89 dollars so that I can get Windows Media Center which was already included free as part of the operating system in Windows 7.

It is outrageous to charge $89.00 to upgrade your Windows 8 installation (you already paid for Windows 8 in the price of the computer) to Windows 8 Pro. You can upgrade from Windows XP or Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro for the same price.

Thanks, but NO thanks! Microsoft is no longer focusing on creating great operating systems with features that customers want, they are focusing on offering less and then wringing money out of the consumer to get features that were already included in Windows 7.

If you have to charge for Windows Media Center for Windows 8, put it in the APP store for 10 dollars and get serious about serving the customer.

If you have a newly purchased win8 system/laptop starting, you will likely still qualify for using the less than fifteen promotion MS has right now until January 31, 2012. Go to windowsupgradeoffer.com , register, download and save the upgrade agent, wait for the e-mail to arrive with the discount code, right-click the .exe, choose properties, choose WinXP compatibility mode and use administrative rights, click Okay. Now double-click and follow the steps to get you the activation code and be sure to enter the discount code that arrived in your e-mail to receive the discount. Once you have the activation code, enter it into the "add new features to Windows" in the system control panel or use the right-swipe action to search for add then you'll see the link to add new features. Select I have a code, enter it and your machine will then upgrade. Next it'll reboot a time or two, then your machine will now be at Windows 8 Pro. If you want to use Windows Media Center you can until Jan 31, 2013 get a free feature code for use in Win8Pro via windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/feature-packs and scroll to second half. Within 2-5 days you'll get an e-mail with the activation code, go to Add features to windows of your win8pro install and choose I have a code, enter the code from the e-mail and then Windows Media Center will be installed.

1.0 out of 5 stars Beware! September 10, 2013
Platform for Display:PC Download|Verified Purchase
First, don't download this or any software from Amazon. If something is wrong they will not refund your money or help you in any way, except to give you Microsoft's phone number. Better to pay a little more and buy it directly from Microsoft. At least then you have some leverage if there is a problem.
Second, don't buy this software from anyone unless you FULLY understand it, and Microsoft is very little help in this regard. Their advertising is incomplete.
I bought this so I could burn slideshows with music onto a DVD by means of Windows Media Center. But SURPRISE! that feature was dropped from Windows 8 Media Center, so I am out $90. So I would say beware both Microsoft and Amazon. I feel like a sucker.
I have bought tons of stuff from Amazon over the years and have had only two bad experiences--both by downloading software. It's like dealing with a different company. No customer support or service at all. Quite a shock.
