This reference will help Windows 2000 administrators, business managers, and technical professionals understand Windows 2000 capacity planning and performance tuning issues in order to optimize the performance of computing resources while reducing the total cost of ownership. This Technical Reference offers ready advice on how to implement, configure, and run Windows 2000 Server-based systems for faster, more stable, and more efficient performance. It covers issues such as optimization and replication of the Active Directory service across enterprise networks, domains in LAN and WAN networks, and Web hosting -- making it a comprehensive roadmap to Windows 2000 performance tuning.

From the Author

New operating systems are designed to offer expanded feature sets, enhance productivity, and access to updated hardware; all of which are supposed to make users more productive. Unfortunately, these enhancements often have the opposite effect; your system may run slowly after installation because these features use more system resources. Tuning offers a way to access these enhancements without killing system performance. A tuned system works faster, operates more reliably, and reduces the time a network administrator requires to maintain the system. In short, if you want to get the most out of your operating system, you need to tune it.

Just about everyone needs help getting their system tuned. Windows 2000 is one of the most complex versions of the Windows operating system ever released, so the need for performance, tuning, and optimization information is greater than ever before. Not only do you need to know where to look for problems, but you also need to know which tools help you quantify the problems and ensure your system is operating at peak performance once changes are made.

I wrote this book with Irfan to ensure that network administrators have the information they need to fully tune Windows 2000. The book includes architectural details, interoperability information, as well as tool usage details. We cover everything from the Windows 200 kernel, to the latest applications. In short, this is comprehensive look at how a network administrator can modify Windows 2000 to make it work better.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible, July 27, 2000

Looking at the table of contents, I thought this book would teach me how to interpret the counters in PerfMon to find a trouble spot. After reading 120 pages of this book I realized it had nothing to do with what I expected. The authors are masters of the obvious, and any network administrator with a bit of experience and common sense could have written this book. I have read many books by MSPress in the past and have found that for the most part are well written, I was sorely disappointed with this one. If you are a beginning network administrator and need to learn where bottlenecks occur, this book may be for you. For those of you who are more advanced, be warned.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for those in a hurry!, November 9, 2000

You really need this book on your shelf. This book is packed with really useful information in an easy to read format. I found that the book's organization makes that information easy to find. The authors don't spend a lot of time telling you things that are nice to know, but don't fix problems. They tell you what types of problems you'll see, solutions to fix them, and how to avoid the problem in the future. This has been one of the better administrative tool purchases I've made.

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding performance and tuning reference!, August 27, 2000

This review is from: Microsoft Windows 2000 Performance Tuning Technical Reference (Hardcover)
When I first started working with Windows 2000, I found Microsoft's documentation difficult to use, problem specific, and hard to understand. This book helped me get to the root of the performance problems with my server in a reasonably short time. I found all of the information provided by the authors was right on the mark and that unlike other books I've read, this one didn't assume I was some type of networking guru. This book is great because it covers both older and state-of-the-art network technology. I was really happy to find detailed information on fiber optics and SANs. I suppose that if you're already a networking guru that some of this information might fall into the common sense category, but for the me the book is indispensible.
