Only if you currently have a device running Windows 8 ("Core") operating system can you upgrade to Windows 8 Pro (Professional) using this Windows 8 Pro Pack (upgrade) product. Windows 8 Pro allows you to connect and share your files and also adds enhanced features if you need to connect to company networks, access remote files, encrypt sensitive data, and access to other more advanced tasks.

The new Windows 8 start screen is your personalized home for items you use the most and can be customized according to your user preferences. Windows 8 Live tiles provide real-time updates from your Facebook, Twitter, and e-mail accounts. Along with the new Start screen, the lock screen now includes e-mail, calendar, and clock widgets.

To access your PC, Microsoft has replaced a standard PIN or password with a swipe gesture; unlock your PC by clicking or swiping preset locations you’ve selected on the lock screen. New functions also allow you to search for your favorite software programs, open, close, hide, resize, or run multiple apps simultaneously with the swipe of a finger or a swipe of the mouse.

Windows has also made changes to make your PC more secure by boosting its existing security features and adding "SmartScreen," which acts to prevent suspicious programs or apps from being installed or running on your machine. Finally, Windows 8 also gives you the ability to "refresh" itself to give users a new starting point and a cleaner version of Windows.

1.0 out of 5 stars Key code won't work on re-install on same computer November 29, 2012
Platform for Display:PC Download|Amazon Verified Purchase
Installed on my Windows 8 machine to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro. Had a few software glitches with other software so thought I'd simply reinstall windows using the factory rescue disk. Now the key code won't work and I have to repurchase the Pro upgrade again. The copy protection scheme is flawed.

If you have a newly purchased win8 system/laptop starting, you will likely still qualify for using the less than fifteen promotion MS has right now until January 31, 2012. Go to windowsupgradeoffer.com , register, download and save the upgrade agent, wait for the e-mail to arrive with the discount code, right-click the .exe, choose properties, choose WinXP compatibility mode and use administrative rights, click Okay. Now double-click and follow the steps to get you the activation code and be sure to enter the discount code that arrived in your e-mail to receive the discount. Once you have the activation code, enter it into the "add new features to Windows" in the system control panel or use the right-swipe action to search for add then you'll see the link to add new features. Select I have a code, enter it and your machine will then upgrade. Next it'll reboot a time or two, then your machine will now be at Windows 8 Pro. If you want to use Windows Media Center you can until Jan 31, 2013 get a free feature code for use in Win8Pro via windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/feature-packs and scroll to second half. Within 2-5 days you'll get an e-mail with the activation code, go to Add features to windows of your win8pro install and choose I have a code, enter the code from the e-mail and then Windows Media Center will be installed.

That being said, you should think seriously about staying with Windows 7. After all, Windows 8 seems to be just a shell over Windows 7. It is not really needed. However, if you find yourself with a computer with Windows 8, get the Pro Pack and take advantage of all the features of the new Windows. At the very least, you will be able to play DVDs.

1.0 out of 5 stars still a glitch and won't download November 24, 2012
Platform for Display:PC Download|Amazon Verified Purchase
I purchased the product for download last night so I could get the free upgrade to windows media center. It is unfortunate that Microsoft decided to take away features. This reminds me of why I hat apple so much. My entire entertainment center is based around my ability to record tv and other programs onto my computer. Well I ponied up the cash and now I can't even download the program. Customer service is "working on the issue" meanwhile I sit here wondering if I will miss the next episode of Revenge or The Walking Dead because my New laptop doesn't have media center. Good job Microsoft for upsetting so many loyal customers.

As for windows 8, I have been playing with it for about 6 hours now. Once you get past the initial shock that nothing seems to be the same and get the free app windows 8 secrets it opens up and becomes not so troublesome. windows key and d is your friend if you prefer the traditional screen. I think I may grow to enjoy windows 8.

I would not recommend this download to anyone unless they call and confirm that it is working.

1.0 out of 5 stars AMAZON DOWNLOADER is AWFUL December 3, 2012
Platform for Display:PC Download|Amazon Verified Purchase
Unable to download my purchase. Running Win8.. Downloader leaves small .EXE in My Documents. I run it and it says there has been and error, download again. Ad Nauseum. I got my key - where else can I get the download? Amazon's physical delivery is the BEST, its delivery of software is the WORST!

1.0 out of 5 stars Missing Security Groups May 17, 2013
By Paul G.
Platform for Display:PC|Amazon Verified Purchase
The Windows 8 Pro Pack upgrade is flawed in that it doesn't setup a number of built in security groups that would normally be part of Windows 8 Pro. For example, if you purchased this upgrade for the ability to remote into your PC, unless you and all your remote users are machine administrators, there's no way to authorize remote users because there is no 'Remote Desktop Users' security group. Unfortunately, you cannot just add these groups since Windows is looking for their SID (Security Identifier) and not the group name.

There is a TechNet discussion about this that can be found if you Google/Bing 'Select Users button disabled in Remote Settings'. A User has found a workaround that may work for you (posted at the TechNet discussion).

However, this would seem to be a bug that Microsoft needs to address. This Pro Pack upgrade doesn't leave you with a complete 'Pro' version of the operating system.

3.0 out of 5 stars Experienced initial product issues February 9, 2013

Spent countless hours initially debugging the product with Microsoft Tec support. Initially issues persisted with extensive Microsoft product support. I continued to follow up with Microsoft Tec support until they addressed my concerns. Win8 Pro is a good product.

1.0 out of 5 stars Code Didn't Work! February 23, 2013
Platform for Display:PC Download|Amazon Verified Purchase
The Online Code didn't work. I paid you my money for this code and it didn't work! I had to pruchase another code to have mailed to me. That one worked but I feel ripped off because I paid double to get this to work. Your all sales final policy for digital purchases stinks. I should get a refund.

No I would not recomment your online digital download to anyone. I recommend they keep their hard earned money and wait for a mail order copy of the software.
