Book Description

May 20, 2006 0672328984 978-0672328985

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Unleashed, 3rd Edition is the first book on the market to cover Windows Server 2003 R2. This latest edition will keep the text viable with the major "R2" update being released from Microsoft late in 2005. Many of the Windows Server 2003 titles have not been revised since release in 2003 even though Microsoft has released a service pack and now the R2 update.

This book will provide detailed guidance focused on the most commonly used yet most complicated planning, installation, migration, and problem solving topics that challenge IT professionals. This title goes far beyond the basic installation and setup information found in hundreds of other resources and focus on the less understood yet most important details for system configuration, tips, tricks, and techniques to successfully implement and administer a Windows networking system.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

A fresh perspective on planning, designing, implementing, and migrating to a Windows Server 2003 environment. Rand Morimoto and his co-authors began writing this book using their experience from several very large client implementations, some having more than 100 servers in production. On a daily basis, as this book was in production, they had clients with thousands of users taking advantage of the Windows Server 2003 security, scalability, performance, and reliability functions months before the product release. Because of that unique experience, the authors of this book were able to compile the best practices, installation and migration tips and tricks, performance optimization techniques, configuration tuning, and server management techniques for the readers of this book. Rather than revising from previously published chapters in the Windows Server 2000 Unleashed book, this book was written completely from scratch with the belief that this approach would incorporate the true recommendations from the author team for best practices, tips and tricks to get the most out of Windows Server 2003 networking environment. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author

Rand Morimoto, Michael Noel, and Alex Lewis all work for Convergent Computing, an 85-person consulting company that has been recognized by Microsoft as one of the leaders in Windows networking technologies. Because of Convergent Computing major involvement in the deployment of Windows 2003 (beta and production), the organization has been involved with the entire Windows Server 2003 project beginning with planning sessions conducted back in late-1999 (almost 2 months before even Windows 2000 shipped to the general public). With thousands of users migrated to the Windows Server 2003, the experts at Convergent Computing write books based on real life experiences over 3-years before the projected product release.

5.0 out of 5 stars ***Very Helpful***, July 9, 2003
After buying and returning 2 other books, I'm glad I finally found a book on Windows 2003 I plan to keep!

I've been working with Windows since 3.51, and as an MCSE, all I was looking for was a book *on* Windows 2003, not a cut-paste job of some Windows 2000 book. I've been beta testing Windows 2003 for several months, but wanted to double check for expert advice before biting the bullet on the migration this summer.

Based on the book abstract from the authors that said this book was written from *ground up*, I was hopeful this was it!

C1 on the technology primer was a great overview of what to expect in Windows 2003. C5 and C6 on design were good reading, I wish I knew some of *tips* before migrating to Windows 2000 a couple years ago. C17 on Windows 2000 to Windows 2003 migrations gave me several suggestions on how to migrate. And C31 on clustering was the best coverage on load balancing and clustering that I've ever seen printed in a book.

This is a book that an experienced NT or Windows 2000 administrator or architect would find helpful!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Migrations!, July 9, 2003
By
I bought this book a couple months ago based on the reviews here on Amazon. The primary purpose of buying the book was to help guide us through the design and migration from NT4 to Windows 2003.

While we have a long way to go (we're about 1/3 the way through our migration), we used the Windows Server 2003 Unleashed book as our bible. We're looking to expand our migration to include IPSec security and Group Policies once we're done with the core migration.

The only thing I was disappointed with the book was it's lack of information on IPv6. That's my next project here, but as I've been reading on the public boards, Microsoft may be changing the way they support IPv6, so maybe it's better we just hold off.

But I bought the book for migration hints from NT to 2003, and this book guided us along the way. Two thumbs up!

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT Reference!, April 19, 2003
By
I was looking for a reference that covered the new Volume Shadow Copy, DFS, ASR, security components, IIS, RIS for Servers, and migration from Windows NT4 and Windows 2000. After downloading about a dozen whitepapers and buying a couple other Windows .NET Server books (all of which were outdated based on beta code or something), I finally bought this book based on a recommendation from a friend who works at Microsoft.

This book has a chapter on everything! Not only did the introduction tell me about new features I was not aware of in Windows Server 2003 that I'm going to try, but the book had detailed planning and preparation information as well as step by step procedures on implementing the technologies (steps that actually WORKED with the full release (not beta) version of the operating sytsem).

This is a great book for someone who wants to understand the basics of Windows Server 2003, or for someone experienced with Windows and wants to just cut right to the details.

Excellent book!
