5.0 out of 5 stars ***Very Helpful***
After buying and returning 2 other books, I'm glad I finally found a book on Windows 2003 I plan to keep!

I've been working with Windows since 3.51, and as an MCSE, all I was looking for was a book *on* Windows 2003, not a cut-paste job of some Windows 2000 book. I've been beta testing Windows 2003 for several months, but wanted to double check for expert advice before...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a comprehensive guide
This book judging by its massive size seemed to be the end all comprehensive guide to everything server 2003. The main reason I bought this book was for info on IIS 6 and windows media server. The IIS 6 material in this book is phenomenal but much to my dismay not one word was written about deploying windows media server. How can u not even cover one of the most changed...

I've been beta testing Windows 2003 for several months, but wanted to double check for expert advice before biting the bullet on the migration this summer.

Based on the book abstract from the authors that said this book was written from *ground up*, I was hopeful this was it!

C1 on the technology primer was a great overview of what to expect in Windows 2003. C5 and C6 on design were good reading, I wish I knew some of *tips* before migrating to Windows 2000 a couple years ago. C17 on Windows 2000 to Windows 2003 migrations gave me several suggestions on how to migrate. And C31 on clustering was the best coverage on load balancing and clustering that I've ever seen printed in a book.

This is a book that an experienced NT or Windows 2000 administrator or architect would find helpful!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Migrations!, July 9, 2003
By
I bought this book a couple months ago based on the reviews here on Amazon. The primary purpose of buying the book was to help guide us through the design and migration from NT4 to Windows 2003.

While we have a long way to go (we're about 1/3 the way through our migration), we used the Windows Server 2003 Unleashed book as our bible. We're looking to expand our migration to include IPSec security and Group Policies once we're done with the core migration.

The only thing I was disappointed with the book was it's lack of information on IPv6. That's my next project here, but as I've been reading on the public boards, Microsoft may be changing the way they support IPv6, so maybe it's better we just hold off.

But I bought the book for migration hints from NT to 2003, and this book guided us along the way. Two thumbs up!

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT Reference!, April 19, 2003
By
I was looking for a reference that covered the new Volume Shadow Copy, DFS, ASR, security components, IIS, RIS for Servers, and migration from Windows NT4 and Windows 2000. After downloading about a dozen whitepapers and buying a couple other Windows .NET Server books (all of which were outdated based on beta code or something), I finally bought this book based on a recommendation from a friend who works at Microsoft.

This book has a chapter on everything! Not only did the introduction tell me about new features I was not aware of in Windows Server 2003 that I'm going to try, but the book had detailed planning and preparation information as well as step by step procedures on implementing the technologies (steps that actually WORKED with the full release (not beta) version of the operating sytsem).

This is a great book for someone who wants to understand the basics of Windows Server 2003, or for someone experienced with Windows and wants to just cut right to the details.

Excellent book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Reference Guide!, August 16, 2003
This book addressed my questions and then some! I've been tackling Group Policy problems for months and within minutes of jumnping to the chapter on Group Policies, I better understood where my problem was (and the new Group Policy Management Console is REALLY a Windows 2003 add-in that shouldn't be skipped!)

We're collapsing a couple of our domains into a centralized forest, and some of the tips in the book clarified a misunderstanding that my colleagues have been arguing for weeks.

I haven't even scratched the surface of this book, but I have a feeling it'll be well used for many many months to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book / Highly Recommended!!!, April 18, 2003
By
Michael Dixon (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews
I've bought several of Rand Morimoto's books in the past, and this book was just as exceptional as the others! The company I work for is a 350-person law firm with limited IT staff. I wanted to leverage the new security, server consolidation, data replication, and fault tolerance technologies built-in to Windows Server 2003 and turned to this book for guidance.

I'm happy to say that by flipping through a handful of chapters in this book, I was able to successfully migrate my company to Windows Server 2003 this week!

Very well written, and each chapter stands on its own, so I didn't have to read all 1200 pages cover to cover to find the information I was looking for! I look forward to flipping through other chapters to start implementing other Windows Server 2003 technologies!

I highly recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great DR/BP Information, August 8, 2003
By
Sam G (Little Rock) - See all my reviews
The coverage in this book on disaster recovery and business continuity is outstanding! I was in the middle of writing our DR/BP plan when I noticed this book had a whole chapter dedicated to DR planning. I took a chance and bought the book hoping there would be helpful information as I help my team justify our company's migration to Windows 2003.

Very detailed steps, and great recommendations on benefits other organizations have received in their migration process. The steps on migration from Windows NT4 to Windows 2003 as well as the security sections are well defined.

Very helpful book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding! Best Windows 2003 Book on the Market!!!, July 10, 2005
I've bought 4 other books on Windows 2003 to help me with our migration to Active Directory and have been disappointed with the real world experience in all of the other books. This was the first book that had tips and tricks based on real world guidance. I was amazed that the book covered Service Pack 1 being that SP1 just came out a couple months ago. Was VERY helpful as we struggled with our migration process over the past couple months, and after I bought this book last month, we were able to get a clear handle on our implementation of Windows 2003! Outstanding book, I highly recommend it!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource with clear instructions, June 28, 2005

(REAL NAME)
Admins for the Windows 2003 environment are faced with a daunting task: Security in an inherently insecure world. This book is an excellent resource, with instructions that are clear and easy to follow. There is a basic knowledge assumed--this is not a book for beginners--but for the professional, this book is a literally a job saver. Included is information on Group Policy Management Console, Timewarp Client, Security Configuration Wizard and essential protocols. Well worth the investment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great W2K3 Administrators book, July 8, 2004
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book is great for all people interested in Windows 2003 Server. It has examples and instructions on most of the administrative procedures. This book is not ideal as a study guide but more as a reference book for people who are already administators or systems enginners. The book is well presented and easy to read. Well worth buying

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Information on DNS and GC/DC Placement!, July 6, 2003
I glanced at a friend's copy of this book and since I'm on the Microsoft Windows Server Development team, I was very interested in the content and handling of the materials on DNS as well as global catalog and domain controller placement recommendations. I found the information to be accurate and the recommendations for a real world implementation to be very helpful!

I ended up buying a copy of the book as my friend took back his copy. Only complaint I have is that the book is over 1-1/2 inches thick. Not the easiest thing to carry around, but it does cover a LOT of information in depth! Very well written!
