4.0 out of 5 stars Advantages and Disadvantages
I have been running the wireless keyboard and mouse for about a half a month. I use it in my living room, so not being tied down with wires is what attracted me to the mouse and keyboard. And it accomplishes that goal.

The disavantage is that you need to be within 5 feet of the base station, or they won't work. Also, you must be parrallel with the base station...

I have been running the wireless keyboard and mouse for about a half a month. I use it in my living room, so not being tied down with wires is what attracted me to the mouse and keyboard. And it accomplishes that goal.

The disavantage is that you need to be within 5 feet of the base station, or they won't work. Also, you must be parrallel with the base station. Therefore the range of the wireless keyboard and mouse is between 3 and 5 feet of the base station. If you are getting the combo for unlimited mobility, then you may want to wait until they expand the distance from the base station, or be prepared to purchase a USB extention.

4.0 out of 5 stars Maximum efficiency, November 6, 2004
This review is from: Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop - PC/Mac (Personal Computers)
The wireless mouse and keyboard are wonderful pieces of equipment. I'm a very doubtful buyer when it comes to computer peripherals but this purchase broke the barrier. My work is more efficient now. I can put the keyboard on my lap and relax in my chair from a distance. The range is sometimes bothering but trust me, it's not as bad. For those who do not know how it works, there is a receiver with a long cord and you simply plug it into the back of your computer. So you measure the distance from the receiver not the CPU. The farthest you could go without any problems is about 5 feet from the receiver. The mouse too but the laser will only recognize flat surfaces. Music is also more enjoying; the top of the keyboard has play, stop, and volume buttons. You can customize the others to your desired actions. My Documents, My Pictures, My Music, Media, Mail, Web/Home, and Messenger are the quick access buttons available. Also, it has a quick Calculator button, Log Off, and Sleep. The receiver has three lights, each is to show you which functions are turned on or off (or you can choose to hide the receiver, it`s not big). There is a F-Lock key to toggle between the regular F's and New, Open, Save buttons. The keyboard has a very nice design. If you're not into black color, well, this might change your mind. When you type, they keyboard hardly makes any noise. If you're tired of the mouse and keyboard with cords you're on now and are looking for something new, this is the thing.

I've had this product for not quite a week and I'm sending it back. Numerous times the mouse and keyboard have suddenly lost reception and stop working; trying to reconnect doesn't work. The tracking for an optical mouse is terrible and the design is uncomfortable. Sorry Microsoft...stick to software.

I bought two sets of these, THREE and a HALF years ago. Here's my results.

Both keyboards have (and continue to) perform well.
One mouse died after 18 months.
The second mouse never died, but the scroll wheel became so hard to spin that I lost that piece of functionality. This occurred after 3 years.

I put A LOT of strain on my keyboard and mouse. That said, I highly recommend this set.

An interesting note: I paid $36.89 for each set... 3.5 years ago with free shipping. The same product costs $47.99 with no free shipping today.

4.0 out of 5 stars No problems - works well - cheaper than other wireless keyboards, October 13, 2007
This review is from: Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop - PC/Mac (Personal Computers)
I'm finding that the keyboard and mouse work very well. The keyboard has just enough spring and the mouse generally tracks accurately. I have found that when I'm typing extremely fast that it will miss a keystroke every now and then but otherwise I've had no problems. It's nice not to have wires cluttering my desk.

5.0 out of 5 stars More than happy with the wireless range, function and feel, August 17, 2004

Setup was easy, the wireless actuallys works thru a wall as I have my computer in a closet (the transmitter is inside and the closet door is closed - it works!)

The keyboard is full size with a very nice layout - I actually have less typing errors. The mouse is slightly heavy in feel - because of the batteries. Don't know about battery life - been using one for about 3 weeks no problems.

I setup 2 of these in the same room (facing each other) I was waiting for the worse - the mouse across the room talking to the other computer - it did not happen! Super Great Cudos to MS for a good product/value.

3.0 out of 5 stars POOR RECEPTION!!!, September 4, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop - PC/Mac (Personal Computers)
I have two of these wireless keyboards in our home office. The first one worked well for over a year. I just bought a second one identical to the first one. NOW, I'm always getting a weak signal and the signal strenth window comes on at least 10 times a day. Even my older keyboard has the same problem. I called Microsoft and they said there would not be a problem using two wireless keyboards near each other. I find this hard to believe. This really bugs. The battery life is good. I think I my have to return it for the Logitech MX Duo.
