Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Microsoft Word 2000 was designed to be the easiest way to create common Web, e-mail, and print documents around the world. Microsoft Word is currently the application of choice for creating print documents. Word 2000 embraces HTML as a first-class file format and extends Word's industry-leading ease of use to the Web and e-mail. Word 2000 also extends that ease of use to international users, making it easy to create multilingual documents.

From Winmag®

Is it HTML or a DOC file? The answer is: You probably won't care, thanks to Word's seamless treatment of the two file formats. Using XML coding contained within the HTML file, Microsoft embeds key data about your file--everything from the word count to the line and fill colors. It's quite amazing. In fact, when you employ Word in conjunction with Internet Explorer 5.0, you can view either a DOC or an HTML file within the browser and click on Edit to launch the document. You can then make your changes and simply click on Save--by default Word saves it in its original format, but the Save As option lets you easily convert between the two.

Seamless Web saves
A new Save to the Web option from the File menu is much like the Save As dialog box. It allows you to save Word files directly to a Web server. It wa s a no-brainer to add a server location (you need only specify the Web address plus a user name and password), and saving to the server (our ISP, in this case) was no more difficult than saving a file to a hard drive. For documents that include more than just text, Word (and the other Office applications) adds a new folder with the same name as the document. In this folder you can store images and other files contained within your document.

The new Web view also handles on-the-fly document conversions smartly and seamlessly. For example, in Normal view, when you ask Word for a table of contents, it turns your text into a series of headings and dotted lines across the page leading to page numbers. When you switch to the Web view, or save as HTML, you'll see the headings change to hyperlinks. Perfectly logical. Also, a Web Page PREVIEW: option displays your document in the browser without first saving it.

Word's collaboration capabilities are marginally enhanced. You can anchor comments about a document; others can view this text and either add their own or reply to yours (which is then shown as a hierarchy to future readers). Your server has to have the Office Server Extensions loaded for this to work, however. In addition, you can "subscribe" to a document so that when changes are made you receive an e-mail notification. You won't know the extent of the changes, just that changes were made. Further collaboration support is provided with NetMeeting, though it's nothing particularly special in this edition. Despite Office's minor improvements in this area, Lotus' SmartSuite continues to offer superior version-management tools and is better at incorporating revisions from multiple sources.

Colorful new tools
A variety of new tools make your Word document look better. Themes borrowed from FrontPage, for example, can spice up your memo with a blue streak down the left side of your document. If your documents have a lot o f tables, you'll appreciate the improvements to the table editor. Word now supports nesting tables, floating tables (where text wraps around a table) and even side-by-side tables. You can also move tables around the page and draw diagonal lines in a table. In its previous iteration, Word's table handling and formatting features were superior to those of Lotus WordPro. Enhancements to Word 2000 just widen the gap.

If you're a lousy typist or speller, you'll like the new Intelligent AutoCorrect, which attempts to correct common spelling mistakes even if the words aren't in your AutoCorrect list. WordPerfect has a similar feature, which corrects misspelled words when it can find only one alternative spelling. In both products, the feature only kicks in when the word in question does not start a sentence, an odd restriction. Printing improvements include the ability to scale pages at print time, which is helpful if you want to print on different paper sizes. A Pages Per Sheet option let s you create 1-, 2-, 4-, 6-, 8-, and 16-up printing, though it wasn't working properly in the beta we tested.

1.0 out of 5 stars Broken and being spammed by mircosoft, July 10, 2010
This review is from: Microsoft Word 2000 [Old Version] (CD-ROM)
The spell check wasn't working on Microsoft world 2000 so it suggested update it. Suddenly I have a shareware version of Microsoft office and it's spamming for a new cd key. The update description never mention installing another program or in the terms of service. Way to spam your users for a product already bought. I would like to get what I already bought working not defer to anther product for more money. That's insulting.

I needed to replace my Windows Word 200, without the expense of a new purchase. This disc was in excellent condition, arrived in record time, and allows me to use my Dragon program on Word. I would not hesitate to purchase future disc's through this site. Five Stars in all aspects.
