Update: Microsoft updated the Office 2013 license. You may now transfer the software to another computer that belongs to you, but not more than one time every 90 days (except due to hardware failure, in which case you may transfer sooner). If you transfer the software to another computer, that other computer becomes the "licensed computer." The Office 365 Subscription products work on up to 5 PCs, Macs, and select mobile devices without license transferability limitations.

I have used Microsoft Word in different variations for years and years, including the 2010 and 2007 versions of this software. Microsoft Word 2013 is a nightmare! It doesn't function properly (i.e. text boxes will not stay placed and I spent hours trying to get them to stay put) and it is completely dysfunctional in how it is set up. It's trying to do way too much and in so doing it fails at functioning properly for basic tasks. I am also frustrated with Amazon.com over this product because they will not refund my money. This is frustrating given that I buy thousands of dollars worth of merchandise annually and this is the first time I have ever asked for a refund. I absolutely HATE Microsoft Word 2013. And I am not a completely technically illiterate person, either. I am familiar with cloud technology and use it frequently. I blog, do social networking, etc. This is the most user-unfriendly software I have ever used. Save your money. Don't buy it!!!

I purchased the Microsoft Word 2013 download thinking this route was simpler and cost effective. However, the program stopped responding after approximately 45 days after it was downloaded. I contacted Amazon customer service and was told there is no way to refund for a download once the payment was posted. I was advised to contact Microsoft to troubleshoot the problem. Where is the customer service and guarantee of products sold? My advise to anyone considering downloading this product is DON'T DO IT!!!! YOU MIGHT AS WELL OPEN THE WINDOW AND THROW THE $79.99+ OUT!!!

I could go on and on about why I've given Word 2013 1 star, suffice to say, if I
could, it would be zero stars!!!

What a pain it has been, trying to navigate this software to do what should be simple tasks like adding page numbers on specific pages, working with headers and footers, trying to find where things are, on the new 'improved' ribbon....

Microsoft NEEDS and big-time to get 'real people' working at their company, when they design new versions of
software, not just programmers/designers who probably never work on things like book manuscripts themselves.

And speaking of MS, how's this for a laugh:

I contacted their support services about the issues I was having with adding headers/footers to my novel
manuscript and no one I spoke to/chatted with there could figure it out.

I went through 5 (yes, 5) different dept./reps. and none of them had any answers!!

If they don't know how to navigate this software, how do they expect users to?

I'm not geekess, and don't want to be. But with Word 2013 you better be prepared to learn for yourself.

I FINALLY got my page number issues worked out but 'surrendered' LOL when it came to
the headers I wanted to use, on specific pages. I already wasted hours and hours
on this, with no answers.

This was a waste of money. I downloaded it on my laptop which has Windows 8 and my laptop said it wasn't compatible. I had to delete it.

They've done it again. Screwed around with the interface for no good reason, made it hard to read and hard to use. You can't find the settings to get rid of the pale pastel print that is a usability nightmare. I'm going to download a trial of Word Perfect. We don't like the mail program that comes with Windows 8, and I'm absolutely not going to pay for 2013 Outlook on the assumption that it will have the same problems. We're presently trying Mozilla Thunderbird for email. I bought the key from one of the office places.

After several calls and emails, this is MS's response:

"I have tried to contact you over the phone but I was unable to talk to you and have left couple of voicemails. As you have mentioned that you and your wife didn't like the user interface of Word 2013. I respect your feedback but this was an attempt to make it more user friendly. Changes made in this version include a sleek appearance that reflects the look of Windows 8, functional improvements, and tie-ins to SharePoint and SkyDrive for storing documents online. In addition, the various components of Office Web Apps improve productivity in the cloud.

In keeping with the Modern style interface that you see in Windows 8, Office 2013 is getting a new look. Gone are the multiple shades of color that decorated the older interface, as well as the shadows and shading that suggested three dimensions. Instead, everything is minimalist, flat, and stark--mimicking the tiles on the Windows 8 start screen. The idea is that the new look will help you focus on your work rather than being distracted by the objects decorating your screen. This redesign have achieved the goal --most of the customers liked the crisper look."
