Product Description
Still working the hard way? Make your life easier with this compilation of articles from Editorium Update, a nitty-gritty electronic newsletter for publishing professionals. Here's the scoop on Microsoft Word's macros, styles, templates, wildcards, customization features, and much, much more. Full of specific, step-by-step examples that will take you far beyond the basics, this is a rich and detailed guide for anyone who wants to master Microsoft Word. "Some of the sharpest, most useful tidbits about Microsoft Word I've ever seen. Jack Lyon does a superb job of presenting expert-level instruction at a level almost any Word user can manage." -Dan A. Wilson, The Editor's Desktop "This is not your usual 'Ctrl+B will make characters bold' stuff. This is serious information for people who regularly use Word to edit serious material." -Tom Anderson, "Word Help for Professional Editors," Sacra Blue. "Jack Lyon is quite simply the Microsoft Word Jedi Master: Obi-Jack. He automates tasks in Word that would be hard to do 'by hand'-and in some cases, just flat out wouldn't be possible to do. If you use Word to do your job, like me, and have wished that Word 'could only do this or only do that' . . . check it out." -Doug Clapp, PocketPCPress Jack M. Lyon is a book editor who got tired of working the hard way and started creating programs to automate editing tasks in Microsoft Word. He's been working in publishing since 1978 and editing on the computer since 1985. In 1996 he founded the Editorium (www.editorium.com), which provides Microsoft Word add-ins for publishing professionals. Formerly managing editor at Deseret Book Company, he now owns and operates Waking Lion Press (www.wakinglionpress.com). He is also the coauthor of a business book, Managing the Obvious, and a contributor to Word Hacks from O'Reilly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard core information on Word available nowhere else, October 6, 2008
This is the absolute last word on Word, for those of us who have to wrestle it daily for our livelihoods. Acres of invaluable macros, all kinds of inside information, and solutions to the things that bug you. Do you need to do superscript ordinals? Do you want a large list of editing corrections you can do automatically, and all the information you need to set up Word to do the corrections for you?

Then buy this book.

If you use Word to create published documents and you are an advanced user who needs to make it act just right, this is the book. Add Word Annoyances and Word Hacks and you have everything you need.

And check out Jack's Editorium site. He's still at it, adding more good information.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable!, September 18, 2008
By Helen Glenn Court (Washington DC area USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The book is precisely what it describes itself to be, a quick and easy-to-use reference for anyone working on the nuts and bolts of publishing and using MS Word in the process. What are the nuts and bolts? Editing, indexing, proofreading, and typesetting. Even writing. If there's a way to work with the program more easily or to do anything in it more efficiently, this book tells you how. I've known Jack Lyon and his Editorium for years (albeit only in cyberspace) and bought this the minute I saw it was available. From settings to templates to macros to revision tracking, it's all here and then some. In plainspeak, no less, with straightforward and comprehensive examples. A godsend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Top-Drawer Work!, November 25, 2008
As a long-time subscriber to Jack Lyon's "Editorium" service, I already know about the high quality of his work as a developer of methodology for working with Microsoft Word as an initial editorial platform, but to have all this helpful, time-saving and imaginative information in a single volume is not only quite overwhelming but is also enormously comforting. In fact, within hours of receiving the book I was adapting some of the techniques to a current editing project of my own, and I was feeling very well served, indeed. I recommend this volume to everyone who writes and/or edits copy for any final platform -- mine is book text that ends up in various typesetting programs -- and I applaud the leverage (for me, it's many hours of time per book) that Jack's solutions produce.
