3.0 out of 5 stars Works 2003, if you are desparate!, October 18, 2002
This review is from: Microsoft Works 7.0 [Old Version] (CD-ROM)
If you are really cheap or totally bankrupt when it comes to buying a set of productivity tools, here's a saviour or option. This is really low end software and I really don't recommend it, but it is commendable enough to do simple task such typing a one page document, adding numbers in the spead sheet programme. But the database is just not good at all. It's unreliable and not powerful to handle complex task such as creating complex queries or even reports. The product cost forty dollars but if you have an extra thirty dollars, buy Star Office 6.0, if you were to compare that to Works, Star Office would look more like Microsoft Office. It is a full featured productivity suite that includes a satisfactory word processor, spreadsheet, presentation graphics and drawing prgram. The only time I can recall when I really appreciated Works was version 4.5, that was the ultimate works, the Wizards were intuitive and easy to use. It guided you along the way, this really made Works more friendlier and useful than recent versions. So as I said before if you have the extra 30 dollars go for Star Office you won't regret it or just save and buy WordPerfect Office or Microsoft Office.

What's even better, is that the spreadsheet and word processor are compatible with Microsoft Office. So you can save files so that they can be opened in Microsoft Office AND you can open files that someone else sent to you if they were created in MS Word or Excel. This is perfect for the work I do for the humane society that I volunteer for as well as planning my daughter's girl scout troops activities and camping trips.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple to use program that works great!, May 21, 2003

Works is the most unfairly maligned program in the Microsoft line-up. People who refuse to pay enterprise-level prices for Office XP often use this at home. I think it is the greatest. The word processor is very functional for everything except business-grade operations ad the database and spreadsheet are about the same. Anyway, I am very very happy with and will continue to use it. The word processor produces text files that are bloated (I must be honest), but XP's built-in zip feature can instanty shrink the size of your file on the disk. Microsoft has done a wonderful job with this program. Try it before you "bash" it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Under-rated, over-criticized, June 27, 2004

I have used MS WORKS from about the time it was born, when it was quite primitive and sometimes unstable. But I have continued to use it, primarily for databases, because it has become progressively more stable and easy to use. These are not all small and simple databases--many include several thousand items, each with 20 to 30 fields of data. It is easy to "find" single items or to assemble groups of items ("filter"), and to print customized reports. So if you don't need (or want) the super sophistication of ACCESS, I have found WORKS to be a friendly and helpful--and inexpensive--alternative.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not much to offer, March 13, 2003

If you are buying this to use the spreadsheet option it is fairly ok. It doesn't have alot of the features that Microsoft Excel has. The calender is a so-so option. It would be nice if on the calender it would let you see one month at a time without running some of the remainder of other months on the screen at the same time. Also on the calender option when you go to enter a Birthday you have to put a starting time and an ending time. I didn't realize that birthdays had a starting and an ending time. I usually consider the birthday to be the whole day. Also as far as the spreadsheet it is not much to speak of because unless you know a little about spreadsheets they do give you some templates on the web but a very limited amount. Not much to choose from there. But then agan what do you expect with such a low purchase price. I agree with the earlier reviewer think twice about buying this one. I suggest you do your homework wisely. I am pretty sure that you can find other companies products for just a little more dollars that packs a much bigger punch.

This review is from: Microsoft Works 7.0 [Old Version] (CD-ROM)
Works kicks [tush]! This is much better than the last version. Looks great. The new project organizer is easy to use and helps me keep all my documents in order. New features in the Word Processor make it easier to use. The new Task Launcher looks great!

I have used works type products for years. Microsoft Works 7 is the best of the lot. It will work on almost any computer in use today and is definitely a best buy at the current price.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good enough for most users..., November 30, 2005
This review is from: Microsoft Works 7.0 [Old Version] (CD-ROM)
With Microsoft Office going for anywhere between $130-$300 (depending on what apps are included, there's the Education edition, Basic, Small Business, Professional, etc.) WORKS fills a gap Office shouldn't, and that's probably why Microsoft still releases it. I've used WORKS since it ran in DOS and was small enough to be run from a floppy, and it continues to be what it was, a function, if no-frills productivity suite. For most users, this will be enough to create most of the everyday letters and databases. You don't even have to bother with that annoying paper clip...

If you're looking for something more functional, but don't have the money for Office, then the open source Open Office would be the way to go. If Works comes packaged with your PC though, it might just be enough for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Nice, Very Cheap, February 2, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Microsoft Works 7.0 [Old Version] (CD-ROM)
I put MS Works on all systems that I make for other people. It has everything they need, and it dosen't break the bank. The only thing I don't like is that there is no Presentation software, or PowerPoint clone. Then again, if they included that, MS Office sales would go down A LOT!!!

For the price, this is a great substitute for OFFICE. Good, Capable, Easy. I haven't needed anymore, (using as a "home-based" product).
