5.0 out of 5 stars Contains enhanced interface and a more substantive dictionar
Microsoft Works provides a workable word processor The new calendar applet is much easier to use and will import your old addresses if you have the 7.0 version. Works can perform very easily most of the major tasks that Word provides such as footnoting, page numbering, typesetting of longer documents.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad product but there are better for product for free
I have been using Works for years as I had used Microsoft Office but I never used anything more than Works offered for a tenth of the price. The new version 8 is a good step up until I tried Sun Open Office which is free. This product is a full blown office suite and it is free. I doubt this will get posted but try both work and open office and see yourself

Works can perform very easily most of the major tasks that Word provides such as footnoting, page numbering, typesetting of longer documents.
In contrast to the products offered by Sun Micro, the Works CD includes multitudes of useful clipart and there is a link in the Help menu to help you download multitudes more. The dictionary links to Encarta Encyclopedia. The one thing I didn't like so much was still the underdeveloped nature of the spreadsheet. It is more suited to home-related tasks and not to linear algegebraic functions. Still, it was nice to be able to edit excel 2003 documents and save them in a usable format for work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Word, September 23, 2006
This review is from: Microsoft Works 8.0 - Old Version (CD-ROM)
the only reason i bought this was because i didn't have microsoft word and i wanted it but the problem is trying to find it without having to buy the entire office program of works. i wish they would just sell it by itself. so instead of the Word program you get a word processor that only has a few small differences with the actual Word program like it is missing a built in Thesaraus. there are a few other small differences but the program is completely compatible with the Word program. you can save and edit Word documents. that was all i really wanted to begin with. so if you want a cheeper way to get Microsoft Word or something really similar to it, this is the way to go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great combination., July 12, 2006

The most "powerful" software is of little use if it costs too much or takes too much effort. Works is a great combination of features, price, and user-friendliness.

OpenOffice is a free download, and it is good, but the same effort it takes to learn and use half its capabilities can put all Works' tools at your disposal. Even MS Office is not quite as automated or easy as Works, and it costs many times more.

I have a family member who uses Works to make databases, spreadsheets, and reports that I have a hard time replicating with MS Office. I supposedly have the more advanced software, but she gets more work done...

All I really wanted was the word processor in Works. I have had MS Word on other computers and it is great, but this version included with Works-8 does everything I want to do.

1.0 out of 5 stars Chock Full o' Bugs, April 12, 2007
This review is from: Microsoft Works 8.0 - Old Version (CD-ROM)
Once again, Microsoft has proven they can churn out some new schlock overnight, filled with bugs, with limited usefulness. The greeting card section was the most amusing to me- it prints out great looking cards with upside down text beginning at the bottom of the inside of the card. In short, the cards section is buggy and you can sink hours trying to maneuver around it and look for solutions online. I make pc cards all the time and I can say this program sucks. The help section answers nothing, but MS will gadly charge you $35 per question for support. Some huge sections of MS Works is just made up of links to internet sites that one can find easily by using any search engine; I call this fatuous redundancy. The loading for some parts, like the calendar, is slow even on a very powerful computer. This is one of the most useless and shoddy programs I have ever used in my ENTIRE life. It is a waste of space on my pc and will be used rarely if at all. It's hilarious they are charging around $50 for it. This is a $9.99 bargain bin kinda thing. Don't buy it. My pc came with it and that's the ONLY reason it's there.

The software is very slick and easy to use but for one thing
IT WILL NOT LET YOU DISABLE THE WORKS PORTFOLLIO FROM STARTING UP EACH TIME THE PC REBOOTS. there is no way to turn it off ,I am going to throw it out and revert to a previous version

This is a great program with everything I was looking for except, I was hoping for some fonts I needed. I had to buy them elsewhere.
